Jamadagni — Saptarishi Rishi

Jamadagni is a revered Vedic sage, one of the Saptarishis, and the father of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu renowned for his fierce commitment to justice and dharma. Jamadagni was known for his intense austerity and possessed a wish-fulfilling cow, Kamadhenu's descendant Surabhi or Nandini in some tellings, whose theft by King Kartavirya Arjuna's sons triggered the tragic chain of events leading to Jamadagni's murder and Parashurama's subsequent twenty-one campaigns against corrupt kshatriya rulers to restore dharmic balance. His wife, Renuka, is central to another dramatic episode in which Jamadagni, angered by a momentary lapse in her purity of mind, commanded his sons to execute her; only Parashurama complied, and his unwavering obedience earned him the boon to revive his mother, illustrating themes of filial duty, paternal authority, and eventual reconciliation. Jamadagni's hermitage, located in various traditions near the Narmada river or in the Western Ghats, became a site of pilgrimage associated with Parashurama's later life and the coastal lands he is said to have reclaimed from the sea. As a rishi, Jamadagni represents the volatile power of asceticism when combined with worldly attachment, and his story serves as a moral lesson about the dangers of unchecked anger even among the greatly accomplished. He is remembered in Vedic recitations and his descendants are found among Brahmin lineages carrying the Jamadagni gotra.
