Kashyapa — Saptarishi Rishi

Kashyapa is regarded as the foremost among the Saptarishis and is often called the father of creation itself, since Puranic genealogies describe him as the progenitor of gods, demons, nagas, birds, and numerous other beings through his many wives, daughters of Daksha, including Aditi, Diti, Danu, and Kadru. Through Aditi he fathered the Adityas, including Vishnu's avatar Vamana and the sun god Surya, while through Diti he fathered the Daityas, and through Kadru the serpent race of Nagas, making him a cosmic patriarch whose descendants populate the entire mythological cosmos of gods, demons, and creatures. Kashyapa is credited with hymns in the Rigveda and is associated with the creation of Kashmir, whose name is popularly derived from 'Kashyapa-mira' or 'Kashyapa's lake,' referencing a legend in which he drained a great lake to create habitable land, later populated by his descendants. He is honored as a great tapasvin whose penance underlies the very structure of creation in Puranic cosmology, embodying the principle that intense spiritual discipline can generate and sustain entire lineages and worlds. His name appears prominently in ancestral gotra traditions, with the Kashyapa gotra being one of the most widely claimed among Brahmin communities, reflecting his position as an almost universal ancestral figure whose story bridges the boundary between the human, celestial, and demonic realms in Hindu cosmological narrative.
