Bhrigu — Saptarishi Rishi

Bhrigu is one of the great Saptarishis and is celebrated as the author of the Bhrigu Samhita, an ancient treatise on predictive astrology said to contain destiny records for countless souls, making him the mythological founder of Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) as a science of fate and remedy. He is also credited as one of the ten Prajapatis, mind-born sons of Brahma tasked with populating and organizing creation, and his lineage, the Bhargavas, includes towering figures such as Shukracharya, guru of the demons, and Parashurama, sixth avatar of Vishnu, reflecting Bhrigu's expansive and consequential progeny. A famous Puranic episode recounts Bhrigu testing the three gods of the Trimurti to determine who was supreme in patience and humility: he insulted Brahma and Shiva but kicked Vishnu in the chest while he slept, and Vishnu's gentle, humble response—massaging Bhrigu's foot and asking if he was hurt—demonstrated Vishnu's supreme quality of forbearance, an episode central to Vaishnava theology's argument for Vishnu's preeminence. Bhrigu is also associated with the discovery and systematization of fire sacrifice techniques and is remembered in the Manusmriti as a key interlocutor who transmits Manu's laws to humanity. His name survives in the Bhrigu gotra and in the term 'Bhargava,' denoting his vast spiritual and intellectual descendants across Vedic and Puranic literature.
