Vasishtha — Saptarishi Rishi

Vasishtha is one of the most revered of the Saptarishis, the seven great seers of Vedic tradition, and is credited as the principal seer of Mandala VII of the Rigveda. He served as the royal priest (rajguru) to the Solar Dynasty, most famously to King Dasharatha and later as guru to Lord Rama himself, to whom he expounded the Yoga Vasishtha, a monumental dialogue on non-dual Vedantic philosophy and the nature of consciousness. Vasishtha's life is intertwined with his rivalry with Vishvamitra, a conflict that itself became a vehicle for teaching about the supremacy of spiritual attainment (brahmarishi) over mere royal power (rajarishi). He is said to possess the wish-fulfilling cow Nandini, gifted by sage Vasishtha's own austerities, which became a source of contention with Vishvamitra. Married to Arundhati, whose steadfast devotion is proverbial in Hindu households and immortalized as a star observed during wedding rituals, Vasishtha embodies the ideal of household spiritual life combined with supreme wisdom. His teachings emphasize self-inquiry, the illusory nature of the world, and the attainment of liberation through knowledge of the Self. The Vasishtha Samhita, a treatise on dharma and law, is also attributed to him. As a progenitor of one of the principal Vedic gotras, his lineage continues among Brahmins who trace descent from him. He stands as the eternal exemplar of patience, forgiveness, and unwavering commitment to truth even amid great personal loss and provocation.
