✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 65 of 112 — The Radiant Dissolution of Form
Sanskrit Verse
bhuvanādhvādikaṃ sarvaṃ kramaśo yatra līyate | tadbhāvaṃ bhāvayetpaścātparamaḥ śiva ucyate ||
Meditate on the sequential dissolution of all the worlds and pathways into the ultimate ground. After that contemplation, the Supreme Shiva is revealed.
Commentary
This dharana focuses on the metaphysics of the 'Adhvas' or pathways in Kashmir Shaivism. The universe is not merely physical but is composed of six paths (shad-adhva): three of time and three of space. The practitioner engages in a process of 'laya-chintana' or contemplative absorption, where the gross manifestations of the worlds (bhuvana) are systematically folded back into their subtle origins. This process mirrors the cosmic dissolution (pralaya) within the individual consciousness. By mentally dissolving the objective universe—starting from the earth element and moving through increasingly subtle levels of energy, sound, and vibration—the yogi strips away the superimpositions of name and form. The goal is to reach the state of 'Shunyapramatri,' the void-knower, where the distinction between the observer and the observed vanishes. Metaphysically, this technique rests on the principle that the universe is an expansion (prasara) of Shiva's light; by reversing this expansion, one returns to the source (samkoca). The effect is a profound sense of liberation from the constraints of material identity and a realization of the expansive, non-dual nature of Reality, known as Parama Shiva.
Practice Instructions
- 01Begin in a stable seated posture with eyes closed. Visualize the physical world around you, focusing on the density of the earth element.
- 02Mentally dissolve this earth into water, then water into fire, fire into air, and air into the vastness of space.
- 03As you proceed, imagine these elements receding into their subtle energetic seeds (tanmatras).
- 04Now, move further into the internal pathways of sound and time, dissolving these into the cosmic mind.
- 05Continue this inward withdrawal until all objective 'objects' have vanished. When the entire universe has been absorbed into a point of pure potentiality, allow that point to dissolve into the light of your own consciousness.
- 06Remain in this state of pure, objectless awareness. Do not try to think or name the experience.
- 07Simply abide in the vast, empty clarity that remains when the world is withdrawn. If thoughts of the world return, gently dissolve them back into the void of the heart.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the 'worlds and pathways' mentioned in the verse?
In Trika Shaivism, these refer to the six pathways (shad-adhva) that constitute the manifest universe: Kalā (powers), Tattva (principles), Bhuvana (worlds), Varṇa (letters), Pada (words), and Mantra. These represent the entire spectrum of cosmic evolution from the grossest physical reality to the subtlest vibrations of sound and time.
Is this practice a form of nihilism since I am dissolving everything?
No, it is the opposite of nihilism. While the objective forms are dissolved, the underlying 'Light of Consciousness' (Prakasha) remains. The goal is not to reach a state of nothingness, but to uncover the fullness of the Self that exists independently of external objects and mental constructs.
How do I know if I am dissolving the elements correctly?
Success is marked by a progressive lightness of body and mind. As you dissolve earth into water and so on, you should feel the 'weight' of the world lifting. The specific mental images are less important than the feeling of contraction giving way to expansion and subtle energy.
Can this technique be practiced by beginners?
This is generally considered an advanced technique because it requires a high degree of visualization and the ability to maintain focus without an external object. However, a beginner can start by simply imagining their immediate environment fading into a soft, white light to build the necessary mental strength.
What should I do if I feel fear during the dissolution?
Fear is a natural reaction of the ego facing its own disappearance. If fear arises, anchor yourself in the breath for a moment and remind yourself that the 'dissolver'—the core I-consciousness—is eternal and cannot be destroyed. The fear will eventually subside into a sense of profound peace.
