✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 66 of 112 — The Totality of the Self
Sanskrit Verse
evameva jagatsarvaṃ mayi vedyatayā sthitam | na tu me'sti pṛthakkāpi kiñciditi bhāvayet ||
One should contemplate that the entire universe exists within me as an object of knowledge, and there is nothing else existing separately from me.
Commentary
This dharana introduces the radical non-dualism of the Pratyabhijna (Recognition) school of Kashmir Shaivism. It challenges the common perception that the world is 'out there' and the self is 'in here.' Metaphysically, the entire universe is viewed as a reflection within the mirror of the Self (Atman). Just as a city reflected in a mirror is not separate from the mirror itself, the entire cosmos is held within the field of one's own awareness. The technique shifts the locus of identity from the limited body-mind complex to the all-pervasive Consciousness. By realizing that 'the universe is within me,' the practitioner breaks the illusion of duality and the suffering that arises from the sense of separation and lack. The effect is an immense expansion of the heart and a sense of cosmic intimacy. Everything—stars, oceans, people, and thoughts—is recognized as a ripple within the ocean of one's own Being. This practice leads to 'Sarvatmabhava,' the state of seeing oneself in all things and all things in oneself, which is a hallmark of the liberated state (jivanmukti).
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit quietly and observe the space around you. Instead of seeing objects as external to you, shift your perspective to realize that the knowledge of these objects is happening within your consciousness.
- 02Visualize your awareness as a vast, infinite container. Imagine the room, the sky, the mountains, and the entire galaxy existing inside the sphere of your mind.
- 03Remind yourself: 'Everything I perceive is a modification of my own light. ' Feel the boundaries of your skin dissolve, and sense your awareness extending to the furthest reaches of the universe.
- 04Contemplate the truth that there is no 'outside. ' If you see a tree, realize the image of the tree is within you.
- 05If you hear a sound, it vibrates within you. Abide in this sense of total inclusion, where nothing is separate or foreign to your own essence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can the huge universe fit inside my small mind?
This practice distinguishes between the 'limited mind' (manas) and 'Infinite Consciousness' (Chit). While the brain is small, the awareness that perceives the brain is boundless. You are not putting the physical universe inside your skull, but recognizing that all experience occurs within the space of Awareness.
Does this mean the world is just my imagination?
In this tradition, the world is not 'imaginary' in the sense of being a personal hallucination. It is a 'real' manifestation of Divine Consciousness. The practice helps you realize that your essence and the Divine essence are one, and therefore the world is a part of your greater Self.
Will this practice make me feel lonely or isolated?
On the contrary, this practice removes isolation. Loneliness comes from the feeling of being a separate 'me' disconnected from 'that.' By realizing that everything is part of you, you develop a profound sense of connection and love for all beings, as they are not 'others' but manifestations of you.
How does this technique change my daily life interactions?
It reduces judgment and conflict. When you view others as parts of your own being, it becomes difficult to hold onto anger or resentment. It fosters a natural compassion and a sense of responsibility for the 'internal' world, which includes all people and the environment.
Is there a specific mantra to use with this visualization?
While not required, you can silently repeat the mantra 'Aham Vishvam' (I am the Universe) or 'So'ham' (I am That). These mantras help stabilize the intellect in the vast feeling of all-encompassing presence that the dharana aims to cultivate.
