✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 64 of 112 — The Pervasive Luminous Space
Sanskrit Verse
sarvaṃ dehaṃ chinnavat tu kṣaṇamātraṃ vibhāvayet | na kiñcinmantrayet tatra tadā sarvaṃ vibhāvyate ||
One should contemplate the entire body as severed, even for a moment. Then, without thinking of anything, one perceives the All (the supreme reality).
Commentary
This radical dharana uses a 'shock' visualization to break the deep-seated identification with the physical body. The instruction to view the body as 'chinnavat' (severed or cut into pieces) is a tantric method to deconstruct the 'deha-pramātṛtā'—the false sense of being the body-knower. By mentally disconnecting the limbs and the torso, the practitioner confronts the reality that consciousness is not confined to the flesh. The verse specifies 'kṣaṇamātraṃ' (even for a moment), indicating that this is a lightning-fast shift in perspective rather than a long, morbid meditation. Once the body-image is shattered, the practitioner is told 'na kiñcinmantrayet'—not to think or chant anything. In this sudden absence of the 'body-anchor' and the 'thought-anchor,' the 'Sarvam' (the All) is revealed. This 'All' is the universal body of Shiva, which is the entire cosmos. The technique works on the principle that when the limited container (the body) is mentally removed, the content (consciousness) is recognized as inherently boundless and all-pervading.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit quietly and take a few deep breaths. Suddenly and vividly, visualize your body as being completely severed—imagine your limbs and torso separated from each other, lying in space.
- 02Do not do this with fear, but with the curiosity of a scientist. For a moment, look at these 'severed' parts as if they belong to someone else.
- 03In that very instant, drop all thoughts and visualizations. Stop 'mantrayet' (thinking or reciting).
- 04Become completely still. Observe what remains when the sense of 'my body' is removed. You will find a sense of awareness that is not located in any one part, but is a pervasive light surrounding and interpenetrating everything.
- 05Dwell in this expansive, unconfined state of being.

Frequently Asked Questions
Isn't visualizing my body severed dangerous or morbid?
In Tantra, this is a 'skillful means' (upaya) to break ego-attachment. It is not about self-harm, but about psychological deconstruction. By mentally 'cutting' the body, you realize you are the witness of the body, not the body itself. It leads to a profound sense of freedom.
What should I do if I feel dizzy during this visualization?
Dizziness can occur as the mind's spatial orientation shifts. If you feel unstable, gently open your eyes and touch the floor to ground yourself. The goal is a shift in consciousness, not physical distress. Practice for very short durations—just a 'moment' as the verse suggests.
What is the 'All' (Sarvam) that I am supposed to perceive?
The 'All' is the experience of Non-duality (Advaita). It is the realization that the same consciousness animating you is also animating the entire universe. When the 'wall' of the body is mentally taken down, you perceive that your inner space and the outer space are one.
Why must I stop thinking (na kiñcinmantrayet) after the visualization?
The visualization is just a tool to 'crack' the ego. If you keep thinking, you just replace one mental image with another. The silence that follows the visualization is the actual meditation. It is in that silence that the boundless nature of the Self is revealed.
Can I do this if I have a history of body dysmorphia?
Those with significant body image issues or psychological trauma related to the body should approach this specific technique with caution or under the guidance of a qualified teacher. Other dharanas involving light or breath might be more suitable and grounding for such individuals.
