Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Technique 50 of 112 — The Central Axis Of Light

VisualizationAdvanced15-25 minutes

Sanskrit Verse

madhyanāḍī-madhyasaṃsthā bisatantv-ābha-rūpiṇī | dhyātāntar-vyomayā devyā tayā devo prakāśate ||

Meditating on the inner space of the central nerve (Sushumna), which is as fine as a lotus fiber, the Goddess (Consciousness) reveals the Divine Lord.

Commentary

This dharana centers on the 'Madhyanadi' or Sushumna, the central channel that runs from the base of the spine to the crown. The verse uses the metaphor of a 'bisatantu,' the incredibly fine, delicate fiber found within a lotus stalk. This imagery emphasizes the subtlety required for this practice. Metaphysically, the Sushumna represents the path of 'Samana' and 'Udana' prana, the neutral ground where the dualities of 'Ida' (lunar) and 'Pingala' (solar) merge. By visualizing this channel as an ethereal, luminous thread of light within the void of the torso, the practitioner identifies with the 'Shakti' (the Goddess) that resides there. As the awareness ascends this thread, it moves toward 'Shiva' (the Lord), representing the realization of pure, undifferentiated consciousness. The technique serves to refine the practitioner's perception from the gross physical body to the subtle energetic body. This transition is essential for 'Kundalini' awakening, though the text focuses here on the experiential 'Prakasha' or light that emerges when the mind is perfectly balanced within the central axis. It is a practice of extreme interiorization and vertical alignment.

Practice Instructions

  1. 01Sit with a perfectly vertical spine. Breathe deeply and visualize a line of light, as thin as a single silk thread or a lotus fiber, running through the center of your spine.
  2. 02This thread extends from the perineum to the crown of the head. Imagine the space inside this thread as an empty, luminous void.
  3. 03As you inhale, feel your awareness gently rise up this delicate fiber; as you exhale, let it rest within the channel.
  4. 04Do not force the breath; let it become subtle and quiet. Focus all your attention on the extreme thinness and brightness of this central axis.
  5. 05As you stabilize, the sensation of the physical body will fade, replaced by the feeling of being a vertical pillar of light.
  6. 06Maintain this focus until the light feels like your true identity.

Recommended Duration

Practice for 15-25 minutes, ideally at the same hour each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I cannot visualize a thread so thin?

Begin by visualizing a wider pillar of light. As your concentration sharpens, gradually imagine the pillar becoming thinner and more refined. The 'lotus fiber' is an ideal to aim for; the key is the intent of extreme subtlety, which pulls the mind away from gross physical sensations.

Is this the same as Kundalini Yoga?

It shares the same energetic geography, but the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra emphasizes the 'Vijnana' or the direct realization of consciousness through the visualization. It is less about mechanical energy movement and more about recognizing the central void as the essential nature of the Goddess (Shakti).

Where exactly should I start the visualization?

Start at the base of the spine (Muladhara). However, the focus is not on the chakras themselves but on the continuous, unbroken verticality of the central channel. The goal is to feel the entire length of the spine as a single, unified axis of consciousness.

How does this reveal 'the Lord' (Deva)?

In this tradition, the 'Lord' is the state of pure, resting awareness (Shiva). By following the 'Goddess' (the energetic thread), the mind is stripped of distractions. When the mind is perfectly focused on the subtle central void, the light of Shiva naturally shines forth as your own awareness.

Can I practice this while lying down?

While possible, it is best practiced sitting up. A vertical spine helps physically align the central channel you are visualizing. If you must lie down, ensure your spine is perfectly straight and you remain fully alert to avoid falling into a dull, dream-like state.
