Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Technique 51 of 112 — The All-Pervasive Space

SpaceIntermediate10-20 minutes

Sanskrit Verse

karuddha-netra-stabdhena hyāṅgulyaikena vigrahe | dṛṣṭe tatraiva śūnye ca dvaitamātraṃ vilīyate ||

By obstructing the ears and other openings with the hands, and focusing on the void within, all duality is dissolved.

Commentary

Dharana 51 utilizes the physical blocking of sensory inputs to force the consciousness into a state of 'Sunya' or void. By using the fingers to close the ears (and often the eyes and nose in related variations like Shanmukhi Mudra), the practitioner cuts off the 'five streams' of external perception. This creates an immediate sensory vacuum. Metaphysically, the 'Vigraha' (body) becomes a laboratory for experiencing the void. When the external world is silenced, the internal sounds (Anahata Nada) and internal spaces become vastly magnified. The practitioner is instructed to gaze into the 'Shunya' (the void) that arises when the senses are stilled. This practice targets the core of 'Dvaita' (duality)—the distinction between 'me' inside and the 'world' outside. By creating a physical barrier to the outside, the mind ironically discovers that the internal space is identical to the external space. The walls of the ego, which are built on sensory data, begin to crumble. The resulting state is one of non-dual awareness where the practitioner no longer feels confined by the physical skin, but rather experiences themselves as the vast space in which all things occur.

Practice Instructions

  1. 01Sit comfortably. Raise your elbows to shoulder height and use your thumbs to firmly but gently close your ears.
  2. 02You may also use your fingers to lightly cover your eyes and nostrils, or simply keep your eyes closed.
  3. 03Listen to the internal sound that arises from within—it may sound like a hum or a distant roar.
  4. 04Simultaneously, focus on the darkness or space behind your closed eyes. Do not look for images; look into the emptiness itself.
  5. 05Stay with this sensory deprivation, turning your attention toward the 'knower' of the silence.
  6. 06Feel the boundaries of your body softening. As you continue, the sense of being an 'observer' separate from the 'void' will diminish.
  7. 07Remain in this state of sensory occlusion for 10 to 15 minutes.

Recommended Duration

Practice for 10-20 minutes, ideally at the same hour each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this require the full Shanmukhi Mudra?

While the full mudra (closing ears, eyes, nose, and mouth) is beneficial, the verse specifically emphasizes blocking the ears to internalize awareness. The key is the 'stabdhena'—the stillness created by halting the sensory flow. Start by just closing the ears and see how it affects your concentration.

What is the 'void' I am supposed to see?

The 'void' is not literally 'nothingness.' It is the absence of objective content. It is the vast, dark, yet potentially luminous space that remains when you stop looking at things. It is the screen of consciousness itself, before any pictures are projected onto it.

My arms get tired holding them up. Can I rest them?

Yes. If the physical discomfort becomes a distraction, you can rest your elbows on a table or a meditation bolster. The physical posture is a tool to facilitate the internal state; do not let the struggle with your arms prevent the dissolution of duality.

Is the internal sound I hear significant?

Yes, that is the 'Anahata Nada' or unstruck sound. While this dharana focuses on the void, the sound often leads you deeper into that void. Acknowledge the sound as a vibration of consciousness, then look for the silence from which the sound emerges.

How does this practice dissolve duality?

Duality relies on the distinction between 'here' and 'there.' By closing the senses, you remove the 'there.' When you focus intensely on the 'here' (the internal space), it eventually expands until the concept of 'inside' and 'outside' loses its meaning, leaving only unified awareness.
