Yajnavalkya — Vedic Rishi

Yajnavalkya is one of the most philosophically sophisticated sages of the Upanishadic period, credited as a central teacher in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, where his dialogues with his wife Maitreyi and with King Janaka's court of scholars represent some of the most profound explorations of the nature of the Self (Atman) and its identity with ultimate reality (Brahman) in all of Vedantic literature. His famous discourse to Maitreyi, in which he explains that wealth cannot grant immortality but knowledge of the Self can, and that all things are dear not for their own sake but because the Self is dear, is considered a masterclass in the analytical unfolding of non-dual philosophy. Yajnavalkya is also credited with revealing the Shukla (White) Yajurveda directly from the sun god Surya after renouncing his prior teachings under Vaishampayana in a dramatic episode involving the regurgitation of Vedic knowledge, later said to have transformed into partridges (tittiri) representing the origin of the rival Krishna Yajurveda tradition. He is traditionally credited with authorship or inspiration behind the Yajnavalkya Smriti, an important legal text, and the Shatapatha Brahmana, a vast ritual and philosophical commentary. In the famous Brahmayajna debates at King Janaka's court, Yajnavalkya defeats all rival scholars, including the formidable female philosopher Gargi Vachaknavi, through superior dialectical skill and depth of realization, ultimately winning the prize of a thousand cows adorned with gold, symbolizing unmatched mastery of Vedic knowledge.
