Kapila — Vedic Rishi

Kapila is revered as the founder of the Samkhya school, one of the six orthodox darshanas of Hindu philosophy and among the oldest systematic philosophical frameworks in India, articulating a dualistic metaphysics distinguishing Purusha (pure consciousness) from Prakriti (primordial matter) and analyzing the evolution of the cosmos through twenty-four fundamental principles (tattvas). His teachings, though the original Samkhya Sutra attributed to him is largely lost, survive through later compilations such as the Samkhya Karika of Ishvarakrishna and extensive references throughout the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana, where he appears as a teacher of profound metaphysical insight. In the Bhagavata Purana, Kapila is identified as an avatar of Vishnu who incarnates specifically to teach his mother Devahuti the path of self-realization through discriminative knowledge (viveka) between spirit and matter, a discourse that forms one of the most philosophically dense sections of that text. Kapila is also associated with the famous episode of King Sagara's sixty thousand sons, who disturbed his meditation while searching for a stolen sacrificial horse and were reduced to ashes by his ascetic gaze, later redeemed when their descendant Bhagiratha brought the Ganges down to earth to purify their remains. Samkhya's emphasis on enumeration and analysis of the components of experience profoundly influenced later Yoga philosophy, particularly Patanjali's system, which adopts much of Samkhya's metaphysical framework while adding a practical eightfold path toward liberation.
