✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 26 of 112 — The Void Of The Five Senses
Sanskrit Verse
sarvaṃ dehaṃ tanmātra-mūrtiṃ dhyāyet krameṇa vai | sa śūnyatāṃ nīyamānaḥ śūnyarūpaḥ prakāśate ||
One should meditate on the entire body as being composed of the tanmatras (subtle essences). Thus, being led to the state of void, one shines as the form of the Void.
Commentary
This dharana utilizes the Samkhya and Tantric metaphysics of the 'Tanmatras'—the subtle primordial essences of sound, touch, form, taste, and smell. In this practice, the practitioner deconstructs the physical body from a solid, fleshy object into its energetic components. By viewing the body as a collection of subtle sensory potentials rather than a 'thing,' the practitioner begins to dissolve the identification with the physical form. This process leads to 'Shunyata' (Emptiness or Void). In Kashmir Shaivism, Emptiness is not a nihilistic nothingness, but rather 'Parashunya'—a fullness of potentiality that is empty of limited objects. By systematically resolving the body back into its subtle essences, the yogi realizes that the 'I' is not the body, nor even the subtle energy, but the luminous background of awareness in which these essences appear. The result is 'Shunyarupa,' where the practitioner 'shines' as the Void itself. This practice breaks the 'granthis' (knots) of worldly attachment and grants the realization that the universe and the body are made of the same vibrating light of consciousness.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a meditative posture. Close your eyes and begin to contemplate your physical body. Instead of seeing it as skin and bone, resolve it into the five subtle essences.
- 02Feel the element of earth as the tanmatra of smell, water as taste, fire as form/sight, air as touch, and ether as sound.
- 03Imagine your body is a cloud of these subtle frequencies. Gradually withdraw these essences into one another: smell into taste, taste into sight, sight into touch, and touch into sound.
- 04Finally, dissolve the essence of sound into the silent void of the heart-space. As the physical and subtle sensations vanish, remain as the witnessing awareness.
- 05See yourself as a hollow shell of light, and then let even that light merge into the infinite space of the universe.
- 06You are no longer a person; you are the vast, shining Emptiness.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly are Tanmatras?
Tanmatras are the 'subtle elements' or the pure potentials of sensory experience. They are the link between the objective world and the subjective mind. By focusing on them, you are looking at the 'DNA' of your sensory reality, allowing you to dissolve the gross perception of the body into its energetic blueprints.
Is this practice the same as Buddhist Emptiness?
While the term 'Shunyata' is used, the Shaiva perspective differs slightly. In Shaivism, the Void is 'Purna' (Full). When you become 'Shunyarupa' (the form of the void), you are not becoming nothing; you are identifying with the infinite, creative power of Shiva that contains all things in a state of potentiality.
I find it hard to visualize the dissolution. Any tips?
Instead of a visual image, focus on the 'feeling' or 'vibration' of each sense. Feel the heat (fire) of the body and let it expand until it has no boundaries. Feel the breath (air) and let it merge with the atmosphere. Dissolution is more about releasing boundaries than creating a mental movie.
Can this lead to out-of-body experiences?
Yes, as the mind detaches from the gross physical form and identifies with the subtle tanmatras, a sense of expansion or floating is common. Do not be alarmed or chase these sensations. Simply remain as the observer of the process, maintaining your focus on the ultimate state of Shunyata.
How do I return to normal awareness after this?
Always conclude by slowly reversing the process. Bring awareness back to the breath, then the sensation of the skin, and finally the weight of the body. Wiggle your fingers and toes before opening your eyes. This ensures that the high-frequency state is integrated into your physical nervous system safely.
