Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Technique 27 of 112 — The Core Of The Central Channel

VisualizationIntermediate10-20 minutes

Sanskrit Verse

madhyanāḍī-madhyasaṃsthā visṛkṣeṇa māṇikā-nibha | dhyāyet-sūkṣmatarā-rūpā śāntir-ūrdhve pravartate ||

One should meditate on the inner wall of the central channel (Sushumna), situated in the middle, as thin as a fiber of a lotus stalk; then, by the grace of the Goddess, a supreme peace is revealed.

Commentary

This dharana directs the attention to the most subtle aspect of the 'Madhyanadi' or Sushumna Nadi. The verse uses the metaphor of a lotus fiber ('manika-nibha') to describe the extreme subtlety and delicacy required in this concentration. Metaphysically, the central channel is the path of 'Kula-Kundalini,' the evolutionary energy of the human being. However, this specific technique does not focus on the forceful rising of energy, but rather on the refined contemplation of the space 'within' the channel. It is a practice of 'Sukshma' (subtlety). By focusing on something so incredibly fine, the mind is forced to sharpen its focus and drop all coarse thoughts. This leads to the 'Urdhve' (upward) movement of consciousness, resulting in 'Shanti'—a profound, unshakeable peace. The 'Goddess' mentioned (implied by the feminine forms) represents the Shakti that naturally reveals the peaceful nature of Shiva when the mind becomes one-pointed and enters the central path of balance between the dualities of Ida and Pingala.

Practice Instructions

  1. 01Sit quietly and visualize your spine. Imagine within the spine a luminous, transparent tube—the Sushumna Nadi.
  2. 02Now, go even deeper. Visualize a thread-like fiber, as thin as the finest silk or a lotus filament, running through the very center of that tube from the base to the crown.
  3. 03Focus all your attention on the extreme thinness and luminosity of this fiber. Imagine it is glowing with a soft, steady light.
  4. 04As you breathe, feel your awareness being drawn into the center of this fiber. The more you focus on its subtlety, the more your external worries and internal dialogues will seem to fall away.
  5. 05Hold your mind on this 'inner-most' line of light until you feel a sense of profound, cool peace descending from above.

Recommended Duration

Practice for 10-20 minutes, ideally at the same hour each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the Madhyanadi located?

In the subtle body, it corresponds to the spinal column, running from the Muladhara (perineum) to the Sahasrara (crown). However, for this practice, do not worry about anatomical precision; focus on the 'centrality' of your being, the axis of your own awareness.

Why use the lotus fiber as a metaphor?

The lotus fiber is incredibly strong yet nearly invisible and delicate. This symbolizes the nature of the soul—subtle enough to be missed by the gross senses, yet the foundational strength of our existence. It teaches the mind to move from 'gross' to 'subtle' perception.

What if I cannot 'see' the fiber?

Visualization is not just seeing; it is 'feeling-thought.' If you cannot see a light, try to feel a thin, vibrating line of tension or energy running up your center. The 'intent' to focus on the center is more important than the clarity of the mental image.

Is this a Kundalini awakening technique?

While it involves the Sushumna, this is more of a 'Jnana' (knowledge) and 'Shanti' (peace) practice. It prepares the 'nadi' by purifying it through subtle attention, making it a safe and peaceful foundation for any future energetic movements.

What does 'peace revealed above' mean?

It refers to 'Urdhva-shakti.' As the mind enters the central channel, the energy naturally moves upward toward the higher centers of consciousness. This produces a state of mental clarity and emotional tranquility that feels like it is 'descending' or 'opening' from the crown area.
