✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 3 of 112 — The Radiant Flow of Shakti
Sanskrit Verse
na vrajenna viśecchaktiḥ marudrūpā vikāsite | nir विकल्पtayā madhye tayā bhairavarūpatā ||
When the breath-energy (Shakti) neither goes out nor enters, and is blossomed in the center, through that state free of thought, the form of Bhairava appears.
Commentary
Dharana 3 describes the state of 'Vikasite' or blossoming in the center (Madhya). This refers to the Sushumna Nadi, the central channel of the subtle body. In ordinary consciousness, energy moves outward toward the senses or inward toward the ego. This technique involves balancing the breath so perfectly that the Prana and Apana enter the central path and become neutralized. When this happens, the 'Shakti'—the vital life force—is said to 'blossom.' This is not a physical action but a metaphysical event where the duality of subject and object is transcended. The term 'Nirvikalpataya' is crucial; it means a state free of mental constructs or 'Vikalpas.' In this state, the practitioner does not think about the breath or the self; they simply 'are.' The center is not just a point in the body but the ontological center of existence. By stabilizing the energy in this non-moving center, the practitioner experiences the 'Bhairavarupata'—the very form and essence of the Divine. This is a state of Samadhi where the distinction between the individual and the cosmos vanishes into a singular, radiant intensity of being.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a meditative posture and bring your awareness to the central axis of your body, from the base of the spine to the crown.
- 02Practice very fine, subtle breathing. Imagine the breath becoming so light that it barely moves the air in front of your nostrils.
- 03Direct this subtle energy into the central channel (Sushumna). Visualize the energy gathering at the heart or the mid-eyebrow point.
- 04As the breath becomes virtually imperceptible, focus on the stillness in the center where the breath seems to neither enter nor leave.
- 05Stay in this 'blossoming' center. If thoughts arise, do not engage; let them dissolve back into the central channel.
- 06Experience the radiance of your own awareness expanding from this central point until it fills your entire being.
- 07The goal is to remain in this 'Nirvikalpa' (thought-free) state as the energy stabilizes in the center.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does 'blossoming' feel like in practice?
Blossoming (Vikasite) is often described as a sense of internal expansion, warmth, or a sudden clarity of mind. It feels as if the narrow boundaries of the body are opening up, and the internal space is merging with the external universe. It is a joyful and luminous sensation of presence.
Is this the same as Kundalini awakening?
While related, this dharana focuses on the 'Madhya' (middle) state of the breath and awareness. It naturally facilitates the movement of Kundalini into the Sushumna, but the emphasis is on the stillness and the cessation of mental constructs (Nirvikalpa) rather than the forceful upward movement of energy.
How can I stop 'Vikalpas' (thoughts) from arising?
The technique doesn't ask you to 'fight' thoughts. Instead, by focusing on the 'Madhya' where the breath is balanced, thoughts naturally lose their momentum. As the energy stabilizes in the center, the fuel for mental activity is withdrawn, and the mind settles into a thought-free state spontaneously.
What if my breath feels restricted?
If the breath feels restricted, you are trying too hard. The verse suggests a state where the breath 'neither enters nor leaves' because it has become so subtle. This should be a result of deep relaxation and concentration, not a physical blockage of the airway. Relax and let it happen.
Can this state be maintained during daily activity?
While the initial practice requires quiet meditation, the ultimate goal of Kashmir Shaivism is to maintain this 'middle' awareness during all activities. Once you recognize the 'Bhairava state' in meditation, you can learn to touch that inner center even while moving, speaking, or working in the world.
