Tirumular — Tamil Siddhar Rishi

Tirumular is among the most revered of the Tamil Siddhars and Nayanmars (Shaiva saint-poets), celebrated as the author of the Tirumantiram, a monumental work of three thousand verses that forms the tenth book of the Tirumurai, the canonical Tamil Shaiva Siddhanta scripture, and represents one of the earliest and most systematic syntheses of Tantric, Yogic, and Vedantic thought within the Tamil devotional and philosophical tradition. According to legend, Tirumular was originally a Himalayan yogi named Sundaranathar, a disciple of Nandi (or Nandinatha), who traveled south and, upon finding the corpse of a cowherd named Mulan beside his dead cattle in a field near Chidambaram, took pity on the grieving cows and entered Mulan's body through yogic power to comfort them, subsequently choosing to remain in this borrowed body rather than reclaiming his own, adopting the name Tirumular to honor his host. He is said to have then sat under a tree in deep meditation, composing a single verse per year for three thousand years, encapsulating in the Tirumantiram a comprehensive vision of Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy that integrates the physical discipline of Hatha Yoga, the metaphysics of Shaiva non-dualism, and profound ethical teachings, most famously the oft-quoted aphorism 'Anbe Sivam,' meaning 'Love itself is Shiva,' equating divine love with the ultimate reality. His teachings profoundly influenced later Tamil Shaiva theology and continue to be studied and recited in Shaiva mathas across Tamil Nadu.
