Matsyendranath — Nath Rishi

Matsyendranath, also known as Macchindranath or Minanath, is revered as the founder of the Nath Sampradaya and one of the earliest teachers of Hatha Yoga, credited with receiving the original teachings of yoga directly from Shiva, whom he is said to have overheard while hidden inside the belly of a fish (hence the name 'Lord of the Fish'), an origin story that explains his name and situates him as a direct recipient of divine yogic knowledge otherwise reserved for Shiva and Parvati alone. As guru to Gorakhnath, arguably history's most influential systematizer of Hatha Yoga, Matsyendranath stands at the very fountainhead of the Nath lineage, a tradition of tantric yogis emphasizing physical and subtle body transformation as a path to liberation and, in some interpretations, physical immortality. He is honored in both Hindu and Buddhist Tantric traditions, being identified in Newar Buddhism of the Kathmandu Valley with the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and celebrated in the major annual Rato Machhindranath chariot festival, reflecting his unusually broad cross-sectarian veneration across South Asia. Texts attributed to him, most notably the Kaulajnananirnaya, blend Kaula Tantra with early Hatha Yoga techniques, providing some of the earliest documented references to practices like the chakras, kundalini, and specific pranayama methods that would later be elaborated in classical Hatha Yoga texts. His teachings emphasize the transformation of ordinary embodied experience into a vehicle for spiritual liberation, rejecting renunciation of the body in favor of its purification and mastery.
