Markandeya — Vedic Rishi

Markandeya is a celebrated Chiranjivi, one of the immortal sages of Hindu tradition, best known for his extraordinary devotion to Shiva that overcame even Yama, the god of death, in one of the most cherished stories of unwavering faith in Hindu mythology. Born to sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudmati after prolonged austerities, Markandeya was granted a boon of either a short life filled with virtue or a long ordinary life, and his parents chose the former; destined to die at sixteen, Markandeya spent his short allotted time in intense worship of Shiva, and when Yama arrived to claim him, Markandeya clung to the Shiva lingam so fervently that Shiva himself intervened, kicking away Death and granting the boy eternal youth and immortality, an episode commemorated in the epithet Kalantaka or 'conqueror of time' for Shiva. Markandeya is also the narrator of the Markandeya Purana, one of the eighteen major Puranas, which notably contains the Devi Mahatmya (also called Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path), the foundational text of Goddess worship recounting the Devi's victories over the buffalo demon Mahishasura and other adversaries, recited widely during Navaratri festivals. In the Mahabharata, Markandeya appears as a wise counselor to the Pandavas during their exile, narrating numerous edifying tales, including the story of Savitri and Satyavan, which itself became a paradigm of marital devotion and the power of a wife's determination to overcome death.
