Vastu Purusha Yantra — Yantra

According to Hindu cosmology, when a great formless being threatened to obstruct the process of creation, the gods pinned him face down to the earth, and this being, Vastu Purusha, has ever since resided beneath every constructed structure, his body's constellation of divine energies determining the auspiciousness of any building erected above him. This foundational myth underlies Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian science of architecture and spatial design, which holds that the placement of rooms, doors, and objects within a building either honors or disturbs this cosmic being's energy field, directly influencing the health, prosperity, and harmony of those who dwell within. The Vastu Purusha Yantra distills this elaborate architectural science into a single object of worship, allowing homeowners to address vastu imbalances in an existing structure without the impracticality of demolition or major reconstruction, which is not always feasible once a building has already been completed. Each of the 45 or more deities inhabiting the squares of the Vastu Purusha Mandala, from Brahma at the center to the various guardians of the directions along the perimeter, governs specific aspects of wellbeing, and disturbances such as a missing northeast corner or an incorrectly placed kitchen are traditionally understood as disruptions to these particular deities' domains. This yantra is worshipped specifically to placate the Vastu Purusha and restore harmony to a space that cannot easily be structurally corrected, making it one of the most practical and widely used remedial tools in contemporary Indian homes and businesses, especially for older constructions or rented properties where architectural modification is impossible.

The Vastu Purusha Yantra depicts a cosmic figure lying face down within a grid, traditionally divided into 64 or 81 squares, with his head positioned toward the northeast and his limbs extending toward the other directions, each square governed by a specific deity presiding over that portion of a building's energy. This grid, known as the Vastu Purusha Mandala, forms the foundational geometric template underlying all traditional Indian architecture and construction.

Place the Vastu Purusha Yantra at the center of the home, known as the Brahmasthan, or bury a small copper version beneath the main entrance during construction if possible. For existing structures, position the yantra in the central room or main living area, ensuring it is not obstructed by furniture. Worship on the day of moving into a new home, or during Vastu Shanti ceremonies performed by a qualified priest, offering water, flowers, and grains while reciting the mantra 108 times.
