Ganesha Yantra — Yantra

Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, holds the singular distinction of being invoked before any undertaking in Hindu tradition, whether a wedding, business venture, examination, or spiritual practice, earning him the title Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. The Ganesha Yantra distills his benevolent power into geometric form, serving as a focal point for devotees seeking his blessing before embarking on new chapters of life. According to the Puranas, Ganesha was created by Parvati from the turmeric paste of her own body to guard her privacy, and after a fateful encounter with Shiva that resulted in the loss of his original head, he was restored with the head of an elephant, symbolizing wisdom, memory, and the ability to navigate complex terrain with patience and strength. His large ears represent deep listening, his small eyes symbolize focused concentration, and his single tusk signifies the retention of good while discarding the bad. The yantra dedicated to him is among the most widely worshipped in Indian households, often placed at entrances, in vehicles, and at the opening pages of ledgers and account books, reflecting his role as the guardian of new beginnings and the god who must be honored first, even before Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva in ritual sequence. Regular worship of the Ganesha Yantra is believed to clear away both external obstacles, such as bureaucratic delays or financial setbacks, and internal obstacles, such as self-doubt, confusion, and procrastination, making it an essential tool for anyone beginning a significant new endeavor.

The Ganesha Yantra features a central triangle enclosing a hexagram formed by two interlocking triangles, symbolizing the union of matter and spirit under Ganesha's governance as remover of obstacles between the two. This core rests within an eight-petaled lotus representing auspicious beginnings, encircled by a square bhupura with gates aligned to the cardinal directions, through which Ganesha's blessing is believed to flow outward into every aspect of the devotee's life.

Place the Ganesha Yantra at the main entrance of the home or business, facing outward toward the door, or alternatively in the northeast corner of the worship room. Wednesdays are especially favorable for Ganesha worship. Offer red flowers, durva grass, and a small amount of modak or jaggery, and light a lamp before beginning any new venture, reciting the mantra 108 times to invoke his blessing of unobstructed progress.
