✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 91 of 112 — Union of Self and Other Awareness
Sanskrit Verse
svavadanyasarīre'pi saṃvittimanubhāvayet | apekṣya svadehaṃ tu sarvavyāpī dinairbhavet ||
One should experience the consciousness in another's body just as in one's own. By disregarding one's own body, one becomes all-pervasive within a few days.
Commentary
This dharana is a radical practice of empathy and ontological expansion. It challenges the most deeply rooted identification: the belief that consciousness is trapped within one's own biological frame. In Kashmir Shaivism, the 'Atman' (Self) is not a private, individual soul but a universal reality. The apparent limitation of consciousness to one body is a result of 'Anava Mala'—the stain of smallness. By consciously projecting the sense of 'I-am-ness' into another sentient being, the practitioner breaks the energetic shell of the ego. The text suggests that if one can genuinely feel the life-force and sentience in another body while simultaneously letting go of the obsession with their own physical form, they will achieve a state of 'Sarvavyapi' (omnipresence). This is not a psychic intrusion or a form of control, but a recognition of the shared 'Samvit' (pure awareness) that animates all forms. The metaphysical implication is that there is only one Knower experiencing itself through billions of points of view. Mastering this leads to the removal of fear, as the practitioner no longer identifies solely with the mortal, individual body.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a public place or with a partner. Choose another person and, without staring or making them uncomfortable, begin to observe their breath and presence.
- 02Gently withdraw your attention from your own physical sensations—the weight of your limbs, the feeling of your skin.
- 03Instead, attempt to feel the 'presence' of life within the other person. Imagine that the same light of awareness that looks out through your eyes is also looking out through theirs.
- 04Do not think about their personality; focus on the raw sense of 'being' inside them. Feel their heartbeat, their breath, and their awareness as if it were your own.
- 05If your mind returns to your own body, simply acknowledge it and pivot back to the shared awareness.
- 06Practice this until the sense of 'me' and 'them' dissolves into a single, shared field of life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a form of mind reading?
No, it is not about reading thoughts or secrets. It is about experiencing the shared 'fact' of existence. You are connecting with their essential consciousness (Samvit), which is deeper than the fluctuating mind or personality. It is an ontological union, not a psychological invasion.
Can I do this with animals or plants?
Yes, the practice is even more powerful with different forms of life. Consciousness is the same, though the 'instruments' (bodies) differ. Feeling the life-force in a tree or an animal helps break the human-centric ego and facilitates the realization of the all-pervasive nature of the Self.
What does 'disregarding one's own body' mean?
It means shifting the center of gravity of your identity. Usually, your identity is anchored in your body's sensations. To disregard it means to stop prioritizing your own physical comfort, location, and boundaries, allowing your awareness to be free-floating and capable of inhabiting other forms of life.
Is there a danger of losing my own identity?
The goal is to lose the 'limited' identity to gain the 'universal' identity. You will not forget how to function as yourself, but you will no longer be limited by the belief that you are *only* that self. It results in a profound sense of freedom and compassion.
Why does the verse say this happens 'in a few days'?
This indicates the potency of the practice. Because the separation between beings is a superficial mental construct, a dedicated shift in perspective can yield results very quickly. However, 'a few days' implies an intense, continuous state of practice rather than a casual five-minute session.
