Technique 109 of 112 — The Unwavering Cosmic Contemplation
Sanskrit Verse
sarvaṃ dehaṃ chinnaṃ vicintayet | tataḥ svasthaḥ paramātmanā ||
One should contemplate the entire body as being severed. Then, remaining established in one's own nature, one becomes one with the Supreme Self.
Commentary
Dharana 109 utilizes the powerful tantric method of radical de-identification. In the metaphysics of Kashmir Shaivism, the primary knot (granthi) of bondage is the identification of the infinite Consciousness with the finite physical vessel. By mentally 'severing' the body, the practitioner systematically breaks the psychic glue that tethers the Self to the anatomical frame. This is not a practice of morbidity, but a clinical surgical strike against the ego-construct. When the body is perceived as detached or non-existent, the awareness has no local anchor to cling to, forcing it to fall back into its source—the 'Svastha' or the state of being established in oneself. This leads to the realization of the Paramatman, the Supreme Self that remains untouched by the fluctuations of birth, decay, or physical boundaries. The effect is a profound sense of liberation and the dissolution of somatic anxiety, as the practitioner realizes they are the spacious awareness in which bodies appear and disappear.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a stable posture and close your eyes. Begin by feeling the weight of your entire body.
- 02Now, using the sharp sword of visualization, mentally sever each limb and part of the body one by one.
- 03Start from the feet, moving to the legs, torso, arms, and finally the head. See these parts as separate from your core awareness.
- 04Do not feel pain; instead, feel a growing lightness as each 'part' is released from your responsibility.
- 05Once the entire body is visualized as severed or dissolved, do not look for a new object of focus.
- 06Shift your attention to the 'Observer' who remains when the body is gone. Rest in this pure, unlocalized space of being.
- 07Remain there, anchored in the silent, formless 'I' that exists independently of the physical form.
- 08If thoughts of the body return, gently re-apply the visualization until only the Paramatman, the Supreme Self, remains as a radiant presence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this practice induce a fear of death?
Initially, it may provoke slight anxiety as the ego clings to the form. However, as you persist, you realize that your consciousness remains perfectly intact even when the body is mentally removed. This actually removes the fear of death by proving that your core essence is not dependent on the physical frame.
Is this a form of negative dissociation?
No, this is a conscious spiritual 'vairagya' (dispassion). Dissociation is an involuntary trauma response, whereas this dharana is a controlled expansion of awareness. The goal is not to hate the body, but to realize your identity is much larger than the anatomical container you currently inhabit for this lifetime.
How vivid must the visualization of severing be?
The vividness serves the purpose of convincing the subconscious mind. You don't need to focus on blood or gore; focus on the 'separation.' The key is the feeling of 'I am not this limb.' Once the sense of ownership over the body part dissolves, the visualization has achieved its primary purpose.
Can I practice this while lying down?
While it can be done lying down, a seated posture is preferred to maintain alertness. Lying down may lead to sleep, whereas the goal is 'Svastha'—a state of being firmly established in the Self. The verticality of the spine helps keep the consciousness focused during the intense dissolution process.
What is the meaning of 'Paramatman' in this context?
Paramatman refers to the absolute, universal consciousness that is the ground of all existence. In Kashmir Shaivism, it is synonymous with Shiva. By removing the limitation of the 'Jiva' (individual body-identity), you naturally reveal the 'Parama' (Supreme) aspect of your own nature that was always there.
