✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 59 of 112 — The Universal Pervasiveness
Sanskrit Verse
sarvaṃ viśvam idaṃ vāpi jagad vāpi viśvato vibhum | bhairavātmakam ityevaṃ bhāvayen-niścalenā ||
One should contemplate the entire universe or the cosmos as the all-pervading Bhairava with a steady mind; thus one attains the Supreme.
Commentary
Dharana 59 is a practice of 'Bhāvanā'—creative contemplation or realization through focused intent. Unlike practices that seek to withdraw from the world, this dharana instructs the seeker to look at the 'Visvam' (the manifest universe) and recognize it as 'Vibhu' (all-pervading) and 'Bhairavatmakam' (of the essence of Bhairava). The metaphysical foundation is the Tantric concept of 'Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma'—all this is indeed the Absolute. By training the mind to see the divine in every object, person, and event, the practitioner eliminates the distinction between sacred and profane. The 'steady mind' (nishcalena) is crucial here; it implies a gaze that does not waver or judge, but simply perceives the underlying unity. This practice leads to 'Sarvatma-bhava,' the realization that one's own self is the self of all. It is a powerful antidote to feelings of isolation and alienation, as it transforms the entire world into a mirror reflecting the face of God. The effect is a profound sense of peace and a natural arising of compassion for all beings who are seen as extensions of one's own divine essence.
Practice Instructions
- 01Begin with your eyes open, looking at the environment around you. Instead of naming objects (chair, tree, sky), try to sense the underlying energy that gives them form.
- 02Contemplate that every molecule, every ray of light, and every shadow is a manifestation of the Supreme Consciousness, Bhairava.
- 03Expand your mental gaze to include the entire planet and the farthest galaxies. Silently affirm: 'All this is Bhairava.
- 04' Maintain this recognition with a steady, unwavering mind. Do not let your thoughts categorize or criticize what you see.
- 05If your mind wanders to personal problems, bring it back to the vastness of the all-pervading Divine.
- 06Feel the weight and presence of the universe as a singular, living, breathing expression of the Absolute, and feel yourself as an integral part of this vastness.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this require me to ignore the 'bad' things in the world?
This practice is not about moral judgment but ontological reality. Even things we label 'bad' are made of the same consciousness. The goal is to see the substratum that exists before our labels. Recognizing the divine essence in all can actually lead to more effective, compassionate action in the world.
What is the difference between this and Dharana 57?
Dharana 57 focuses on the simultaneous collapse of body and universe into a thought-free state. Dharana 59 is more about the qualitative recognition (Bhāvanā) of the universe as the all-pervading Divine. It involves a steady, intentional shift in how we perceive the nature of the manifest world.
Can I do this while walking or working?
Yes, this is an excellent 'eyes-open' meditation. You can practice it while commuting or doing chores by simply maintaining the underlying awareness that everything you encounter is a form of Bhairava. It helps bridge the gap between formal sitting meditation and daily life activities.
What does 'Vibhu' mean in this verse?
Vibhu means all-pervading, omnipresent, or sovereign. It describes the nature of consciousness as something that is not restricted by time or space. By contemplating the universe as Vibhu, you are acknowledging that the Divine is not 'elsewhere' but is the very fabric of reality.
How do I achieve a 'steady mind' for this practice?
A steady mind is achieved through consistency and relaxation. Don't strain to see God; instead, relax the habitual tension of the ego that likes to separate things. When the mind is calm and relaxed, the inherent unity of the universe becomes much more apparent and easier to maintain.
