Technique 107 of 112 — The Unbroken Flow Of Totality
Sanskrit Verse
māyā vimohinī nāma kalāḥ saptaka-pañcakāḥ | etat-tattvaṃ tad-advaitaṃ na vikalpa-viśodhanam || 134 ||
Contemplate that Maya is the deluding power, composed of the thirty-six elements. Realize that this whole reality is non-dual; thus, no purification of thoughts is necessary.
Commentary
This dharana is a quintessential expression of the 'Shambhavopaya'—the path of Shambhu (Shiva), which involves a direct leap into non-duality without the need for complex rituals or purifications. The verse mentions the 'saptaka-panchaka' (thirty-five) plus Maya, totaling the 36 Tattvas (elements of existence) in Shaiva cosmology. The core teaching here is a radical 'Short Path': the realization that even Maya (delusion) and the world of diversity are nothing other than the play of the Absolute. If everything is the Divine, then nothing is 'impure' and nothing needs to be 'cleaned.' Many spiritual paths focus on purifying the mind or suppressing thoughts; this dharana argues that since the mind and its thoughts are also manifestations of Shiva's energy, they are already sacred. By dropping the effort to fix oneself, the practitioner enters a state of 'Sahaja'—the natural, effortless state. The metaphysics here suggests that the distinction between 'pure' and 'impure' is the only real impurity. Once this realization dawns, the practitioner sees the entire cosmos as a single, unbroken non-dual fabric, and the need for spiritual struggle vanishes into the light of recognition (Pratyabhijna).
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a relaxed posture and stop all effort to meditate or concentrate. Look at your current state—whatever it is—and realize it is a manifestation of the Divine.
- 02If your mind is agitated, that is Shiva. If your mind is calm, that is Shiva. Stop trying to 'purify' your thoughts or reach a 'higher' state.
- 03Contemplate the 36 Tattvas (from the gross elements to the highest consciousness) as a single, unified reality.
- 04Accept the 'deluding power' of Maya as a beautiful dance of the Divine. By giving up the desire to change anything, simply 'be.
- 05' Allow reality to be exactly as it is, without judgment or the need for correction. Rest in the non-dual awareness that does not require any mental cleansing because it was never truly stained.

Frequently Asked Questions
If I don't need to purify my thoughts, can I just do whatever I want?
This is a metaphysical realization, not an excuse for harmful behavior. When you truly realize non-duality, the 'ego' that wants to act selfishly dissolves. You act from a place of wholeness and compassion naturally, without needing 'rules' to keep your thoughts pure.
What are the 36 Tattvas?
In Kashmir Shaivism, the Tattvas are the levels of reality, ranging from the five gross elements (earth, water, etc.) to the sense organs, the mind, the limitations of time and space, and finally the pure creative consciousness of Shiva and Shakti.
Is Maya a bad thing in this practice?
No. Unlike some schools that view Maya as an evil illusion to be escaped, Kashmir Shaivism views Maya as the 'creative power' (Shakti) of the Divine. It is the power that allows the One to appear as many, and it is to be celebrated and understood, not feared.
How can I stop 'trying' to meditate?
The effort to stop effort is the final hurdle. Simply recognize that you are already the Self. Meditation is not a journey to a distant place; it is resting in what you already are. Just stop 'doing' and start 'being'—this is the essence of this dharana.
Why is this considered an 'Advanced' level?
It is advanced because the human mind is addicted to 'doing' and 'improving.' To truly let go of the need for purification and rest in things exactly as they are requires a very high degree of maturity and a prior understanding of the nature of consciousness.
