✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 22 of 112 — The Resonance of the Primal Sound
Sanskrit Verse
kālāñjana-nibhaṃ varṇaṃ paśyato’dhomukhaṃ śiraḥ | kṣaṇe kṣaṇe kṣīṇavṛttirvailakṣaṇyaṃ prapadyate ||
One who contemplates the color of dark clouds (or black ointment) with the head turned downward, moment by moment, their mental fluctuations cease and they attain an extraordinary state.
Commentary
This dharana utilizes a specific visual and postural combination to trigger a deep shift in consciousness. The instruction to visualize a color like 'kalanjana' (a dark, lustrous black or deep blue-black like kohl) serves to absorb the visual sense into a singular, infinite void-like hue. In Shaiva metaphysics, dark colors often represent the unmanifest state of Shakti, where all forms are dissolved back into the source. By looking 'downward'—which can be interpreted both as a physical tilt of the head or an internal redirection of the 'gaze' toward the heart center—the practitioner withdraws from the external light of the sun and the distractions of the world. This inward and downward focus encourages the energy to settle and collect at the root or the heart, rather than being dispersed through the eyes. The specific mention of the 'extraordinary state' again highlights that this is a technique of 'nirvikalpa' or non-conceptual immersion. By saturating the field of vision with a uniform, deep darkness, the mind loses its ability to distinguish between distinct objects, leading to a collapse of the egoic boundary and an expansion into the luminous void of Bhairava.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a quiet space and close your eyes. Gently tilt your head slightly downward, focusing your internal gaze toward the space of the heart or simply looking down toward the ground with eyes half-closed.
- 02Visualize an infinite expanse of deep, lustrous blackness, similar to the color of the midnight sky or dark kohl.
- 03Let this color fill your entire mental field until there is no room for any other image. Do not analyze the color; simply merge into it.
- 04As you hold this dark visualization, feel your thoughts slowing down and your identity dissolving into the darkness.
- 05Maintain this focus 'moment by moment,' meaning every time the mind tries to create a new thought, bring it back to the singular, dark, expansive color.
- 06The darkness should not feel heavy, but rather like a vast, peaceful womb of pure potentiality.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why use the color black instead of white or light?
Black represents the 'sunya' or void, the unmanifest state of consciousness where all distinctions disappear. While light reveals objects, this specific darkness reveals the subject. It helps the mind to rest in its own source without being stimulated by the variety of colors and forms.
Is the 'downward head' a physical or internal instruction?
It is primarily physical, suggesting a humble and inward-looking posture (Jalandhara Bandha light version). However, it also implies an internal movement where the 'eyes' of the mind look down into the depths of the heart rather than out into the world of appearances.
What should I do if the visualization makes me feel sleepy?
Drowsiness is common when focusing on darkness. To counter this, maintain a sharp internal alertness. Imagine the blackness as 'luminous' or vibrant rather than dull. Keep the spine erect and ensure your breathing remains conscious and rhythmic to stay tethered to present awareness.
How long should I hold the visualization of the dark color?
The verse suggests 'kshane kshane' (moment by moment), implying a continuous stream of focus. Start with five minutes and gradually increase the duration. The goal is to reach a point where the color and the observer become one, leaving no room for separate thoughts.
Can I use a physical object like a black cloth for this?
Yes, gazing at a dark, uniform surface can be a helpful preliminary step. However, the ultimate practice involves the internal visualization so that the external environment no longer dictates the state of your consciousness. The goal is to internalize the void-like quality of the color.
