✦ Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Technique 42 of 112 — The Middle Channel Of Light
Sanskrit Verse
madhyanāḍīmadhyasaṃsthā bisatantvarūpayā | dhyātāntarvyomnā devyā tayā devaḥ prakāśate ||
By meditating on the Goddess in the form of the central channel, as fine as a fiber of a lotus stalk, residing in the middle, the Divine is revealed through that inner space.
Commentary
This dharana utilizes the Sushumna Nadi, the central spiritual channel of the subtle body. The verse describes the channel using the evocative metaphor of a 'bisatantu', the incredibly fine, almost invisible filament found inside a lotus stem. This signifies that the path to the Divine is not a gross physical artery but a subtle, luminous vibration. The 'Goddess' (Devi) here represents Shakti, the dynamic aspect of consciousness that ascends through this channel. The metaphysics of Kashmir Shaivism posits that the supreme reality (Bhairava) is revealed when the energy is withdrawn from the peripheral channels (Ida and Pingala) and stabilized in the 'Madhyanadi'. By contemplating this central void-space (Antar-vyoma), the practitioner bypasses the discursive mind and enters the realm of pure luminosity. This technique is considered advanced because it requires a high degree of interiorization and the ability to perceive the subtle body. The result of this practice is 'Prakasha', the self-radiant light of consciousness that illuminates the entire field of experience, revealing the non-distinct nature of the self and the universe.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit in a stable posture like Padmasana or Siddhasana. Visualize a vertical line of light extending from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
- 02Imagine this line is as thin and delicate as a lotus fiber, yet intensely bright. This is the central channel, the Goddess Shakti.
- 03Breath naturally, and with each inhalation, feel the awareness rising through this hair-thin filament.
- 04With each exhalation, feel it stabilizing. Focus on the empty space inside this thin fiber.
- 05As your concentration deepens, ignore the physical body and become the fiber of light itself.
- 06Continue until the sensation of being a solid body vanishes, replaced by a radiant, vertical void.
- 07Stay in this luminosity for as long as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the 'lotus fiber' metaphor signify practically?
The metaphor emphasizes extreme subtlety. If you visualize a thick tube, the mind remains in the gross realm. By imagining a thread as fine as a lotus fiber, your attention must become incredibly sharp and one-pointed. This refinement of attention is necessary to perceive the subtle energy flow of the Sushumna.
Can I practice this if I don't know the location of the Nadis?
Yes, the visualization itself creates the path. While traditional texts place the Sushumna in the center of the spine, for this dharana, it is sufficient to visualize a central axis of light in the core of your being. The intent and focus are more important than anatomical precision.
Who is the 'Goddess' mentioned in the translation?
In this context, the Goddess (Devi) is Kundalini Shakti, the evolutionary energy of consciousness. She is the power of the void that travels through the central channel. By meditating on her, you are aligning your individual will with the cosmic power that reveals the Divine (Bhairava).
What should I do if the visualization keeps disappearing?
It is normal for the mind to wander. When the light fades, gently bring your focus back to the base of the spine and 'trace' the fiber upward again. Using the breath to guide the visualization can help anchor the image of the lotus thread in your awareness.
Is this a dangerous practice for energy awakening?
This technique focuses on 'Shunyata' (emptiness) and 'Prakasha' (light) rather than forceful breath control (Pranayama). It is generally safe, but if you experience intense heat or involuntary movements, simply open your eyes and ground yourself by touching the floor until the sensation passes.
