Technique 24 of 112 — The Meditation on the Inner Void
Sanskrit Verse
hṛdyākāśe nilīna-akṣaḥ padmasampuṭa-madhyagaḥ | ananya-cetāḥ saubhāgyāt paramaṃ prāpnuyaat padam ||
With the senses dissolved in the space of the heart, seated in the middle of the lotus-bud (of the heart), with a one-pointed mind, one attains the highest state through great good fortune.
Commentary
This dharana focuses on the 'Hridyakasha' or the 'space of the heart'. In Tantric physiology, the heart is not the physical organ but the 'Anahata Chakra', the center of the individual's spiritual being. The instruction to 'dissolve the senses' (nilina-akshah) into this space involves withdrawing the energy of sight, sound, and touch from the external world and funneling them into the internal core. The 'lotus-bud' (padmasamputa) is a metaphor for the heart center when it is closed to the outside world but brimming with internal potential. Metaphysically, the heart is the meeting point of the vertical axis of consciousness (Shiva) and the horizontal axis of manifestation (Shakti). By becoming 'ananya-cetah' (of undivided mind) within this space, the practitioner enters the 'dahara-vidya' or the knowledge of the small space within the heart which is as vast as the universe. The 'great good fortune' (saubhagyat) refers to the grace (shaktipata) that is often required for this total absorption to occur, leading the practitioner to the 'Parama Padam'—the Supreme Abode of pure Consciousness.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit quietly and bring your full attention to the center of your chest. Visualize a closed lotus bud at this center.
- 02Gently draw all your sensory awareness—the sounds you hear, the sensations of your skin, the light behind your eyelids—into the center of this lotus bud.
- 03Feel your senses 'melting' or 'dissolving' into the void within the heart. Become one-pointed, allowing no external thoughts to enter this sacred inner chamber.
- 04Imagine your consciousness as a tiny flame or a point of light resting perfectly still within the lotus.
- 05As you stay here, the boundaries of the 'bud' will seem to expand, and the inner space will become infinite.
- 06Remain in this state of total inwardness, resting in the silence of the heart-space, until the distinction between your mind and the space disappears.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I 'dissolve' my senses into my heart?
This is a process of Pratyahara (withdrawal). Instead of following a sound outward, you feel the 'hearing' itself returning to the heart. It is like reversing the flow of a river back to its source. Each sense is invited to rest in the heart center.
Is the 'lotus-bud' just a visualization or a real energy structure?
In Tantra, visualizations are tools to interact with the 'Pranamaya Kosha' (energy body). While the lotus is a metaphor, the heart center (Anahata) is a very real focal point of psychic energy. Visualizing the bud helps to contain and concentrate that energy.
What is meant by 'great good fortune' (saubhagyat)?
In Kashmir Shaivism, individual effort is important, but the final leap into the Supreme State is often seen as an act of Divine Grace (Anugraha). Saubhagya implies that the practitioner has reached a level of ripeness where grace can easily flow and transform them.
Can I practice this if I have emotional blockages in my heart?
Yes, this practice is highly therapeutic. By bringing pure awareness into the heart space without judgment, the light of consciousness naturally begins to dissolve old emotional patterns, replacing them with the 'Parama Padam'—a state of equanimity and supreme peace.
How does the heart-space relate to the entire universe?
According to the Upanishads and the Vijnana Bhairava, the space within the heart (Dahara Akasha) is identical to the space of the cosmos (Bahir Akasha). By entering the heart, you are not shrinking; you are expanding into the totality of all that exists.
