Technique 19 of 112 — The Luminous Space Of The Heart
Sanskrit Verse
hṛdyākāśe nilīnākṣaḥ padmasampuṭamadhyagaḥ | ananya-cetāḥ pratyetya parāṃ saubhāgyasaṃpadam ||
With the eyes closed and the mind merged in the space of the heart within the lotus, one attains the highest fortune by becoming one-pointed.
Commentary
This dharana utilizes the 'hṛdyākāśa' or the 'sky of the heart.' Unlike the physical heart, the spiritual heart (hridaya) is considered the center of consciousness and the seat of the Self. The technique involves a dual process: 'nilīnākṣaḥ' (shutting the eyes/senses) and 'ananya-cetāḥ' (undiverted attention). By withdrawing the outward-going senses and plunging them into the inner space, the practitioner discovers a vast, internal expanse. The 'lotus' mentioned represents the subtle energy center (Anahata Chakra), which acts as a container for the divine presence. The 'highest fortune' (parāṃ saubhāgya) is not material wealth but the 'wealth' of spiritual realization—the supreme bliss of recognizing one's own nature as Bhairava. This practice is foundational for cultivating 'pratyahara' (sensory withdrawal) and 'dhyana' (meditation). It teaches that the external world is a reflection, while the true source of light and space resides within. The heart is the meeting point of the individual and the universal, and by dwelling there, the practitioner gains access to the 'spanda' or the creative vibration of the universe.
Practice Instructions
- 01Sit quietly and close your eyes, withdrawing your attention from all external sounds and sensations.
- 02Bring your awareness to the center of your chest. Visualize a radiant lotus flower blooming in the vast, open space of your heart.
- 03As you breathe, imagine this heart-space expanding until it becomes as vast as the sky. Sink your entire consciousness into the very center of this lotus.
- 04If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the warmth and light of the heart-center. Do not analyze; simply feel the presence of the space.
- 05Experience yourself as being 'inside' the heart, rather than observing it from the outside.
- 06Stay in this stillness, feeling the subtle pulse of life within the heart-sky, until you feel a sense of profound peace and contentment pervading your entire being.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is the 'space of the heart' located?
It is located in the center of the chest, slightly to the right of the physical heart, corresponding to the Anahata Chakra. It is not an anatomical location but a spiritual focal point where your sense of 'I' feels most concentrated and accessible during quiet contemplation.
What does 'closed eyes' signify in this verse?
It signifies the inward turn of the 'Indriyas' (senses). By closing the physical eyes, you activate the 'inner eye' or the awareness of the subtle body. It is an invitation to stop seeking fulfillment in the objective world and start finding it in the subjective source.
Why is this described as the 'highest fortune'?
In Tantra, the greatest luck or fortune is the realization of the Self. Everything else is temporary. Connecting with the heart-center provides a permanent sense of belonging and bliss (ananda) that cannot be taken away by external changes, which is the ultimate prosperity.
Can I visualize a specific color in the heart lotus?
Yes, practitioners often visualize a golden or white light, or even a deep blue like the evening sky. Choose a color that feels expansive and peaceful to you. The key is the feeling of 'space' and 'luminosity' rather than the specific visual details.
How long does it take to feel the 'sky' in the heart?
With consistent practice, the 'sensation' of space can happen quickly. Initially, it may feel like a small point, but as you relax and release tension in the chest, the feeling will naturally expand. Patience and daily practice are key to developing this inner sensitivity.
