Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Technique 56 of 112 — The Expansion Of Light

DissolutionAdvanced20-25 minutes

Sanskrit Verse

sarvaṃ jagad-idam-ābhāsa-mātraṃ prathitaṃ yadi | ananyamanasā śāntiḥ parā bhaktiś-ca jāyate ||

If one perceives this entire world as being only a flash of light or appearance, then with an unwavering mind, supreme peace and supreme devotion are born.

Commentary

This dharana utilizes the 'Abhasa-vada' or the theory of appearances prevalent in the Pratyabhijna school of Kashmir Shaivism. It posits that the world (jagat) is not a solid, material reality independent of consciousness, but rather a 'matram'—only—an appearance or a 'shining forth' (abhasa) of the Supreme Light. The metaphysics here are similar to a dream; just as a dream appears real but is only the mind's light taking form, the waking world is Shiva's light taking form. When the practitioner looks at a mountain, a tree, or a person and sees them as 'Abhasa' (luminous appearance), the 'thingness' of the world vanishes. This leads to 'Para Bhakti'—supreme devotion. This is not devotion to a personified deity, but an ecstatic love for the luminous reality of consciousness itself. The 'unwavering mind' (ananyamanasā) is crucial; one must not waver back into seeing the world as a collection of heavy, separate objects. The result is a 'Para Shanti'—a peace that is beyond the reach of worldly dualities because the world is no longer seen as something that can threaten or limit the self.

Practice Instructions

  1. 01Sit with eyes slightly open in a soft gaze (Shambhavi Mudra). Look at the objects in your environment but do not name them.
  2. 02Try to perceive them as 'Abhasa'—mere appearances or flashes of light. Visualize the entire universe as a play of light on the screen of your own consciousness.
  3. 03See the 'solidity' of the walls and the floor as a vibrating field of energy. Remind yourself: 'This is all just an appearance in the light of Shiva.
  4. 04' Feel the lightness of your own body as if it were made of photons. Maintain this perception with a one-pointed mind.
  5. 05As the sense of 'solidity' fades, allow a sense of profound awe and love (Bhakti) for this shimmering reality to arise in your heart.
  6. 06Let this devotion and the resulting peace wash over you, dissolving the boundary between the seer and the seen.

Recommended Duration

Practice for 20-25 minutes, ideally at the same hour each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 'appearance' mean the world is a lie or fake?

No, in Shaivism, the appearance is 'real' because it is a manifestation of the Divine. However, it is 'matram' (only) an appearance, meaning it has no independent existence apart from the Light of Consciousness. It is like a reflection in a mirror: the reflection is real as a reflection, but its substance is the mirror.

How do I cultivate 'Para Bhakti' or supreme devotion?

Para Bhakti arises naturally when you realize the sheer beauty and miracle of existence as a manifestation of Shiva. It is a state of being 'in love' with Reality itself. This devotion is the emotional 'glue' that holds the mind in the state of non-dual peace.

Is this practice similar to modern physics?

There are parallels with quantum field theory, which suggests that what we perceive as solid matter is actually energy in specific states of vibration. However, this dharana goes further by identifying that 'energy' as the conscious light of the Supreme Subject, Shiva.

What is the 'unwavering mind' mentioned in the verse?

It means staying in the state of 'seeing through' the physical form without reverting to habitual perceptions. If you see a chair and immediately think of its utility or price, you have wavered. You must see it only as a shimmering appearance in consciousness.

Can this lead to a state of detachment from my responsibilities?

Initially, it may feel like a detachment, but it eventually leads to a more profound engagement. You act in the world with more grace and less stress because you are no longer burdened by the 'heaviness' of the world. You play your role in the 'divine light-show' with joy.
