Vijnana Bhairava Tantra

Technique 40 of 112 — The Descent Of The Divine

DissolutionIntermediate20-30 minutes

Sanskrit Verse

kiñcij jñātvaikacittena sarvaṃ jānāti dehabhṛt | tattvaikyam upayāty evaṃ sarvabhāvaikabhāvanāt ||

Knowing a single thing with one-pointed mind, the embodied soul knows all. By contemplating the oneness of all things, one attains unity with the Essence.

Commentary

This dharana utilizes the holographic nature of reality: the principle that the whole is contained within the part. By focusing intensely on any 'one thing' (kiñcij) with an undistracted mind (ekacittena), the practitioner penetrates the superficial layer of that object and reaches its underlying essence, which is identical to the essence of the universe. This is the path of 'Sarvabhāvaikabhāvanāt'—the contemplation of the unity of all existents. Metaphysically, Kashmir Shaivism posits that every atom contains the entire cosmos because everything is a manifestation of the same supreme consciousness. When you truly 'know' one thing in its absolute depth, you bypass the intellect and achieve a direct realization of the Tattva (Essence). This practice dissolves the illusion of separation between the observer, the process of observing, and the object being observed. It suggests that the Infinite is not found by running away from the finite, but by looking so deeply into the finite that the Infinite reveals itself.

Practice Instructions

  1. 01Select a single object for meditation. It can be a flower, a candle flame, a stone, or even a single sensation in the body.
  2. 02Sit comfortably and fix your entire attention on this one object. Do not analyze its history or name; simply perceive its presence.
  3. 03Dive deep into the 'is-ness' of the object. As your focus becomes one-pointed, begin to contemplate that the same consciousness that perceives the object is also the substance of the object itself.
  4. 04Expand this feeling to realize that the essence of this one thing is the essence of all things.
  5. 05Feel the boundaries of the object soften as it merges into the field of your awareness. Maintain the conviction that by knowing this one truth, you are connected to the totality of existence.
  6. 06Stay in this state of unified perception, where 'one' and 'all' are recognized as a single reality.

Recommended Duration

Practice for 20-30 minutes, ideally at the same hour each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can knowing one thing lead to knowing everything?

On a physical level, it doesn't mean you gain encyclopedic facts. On a spiritual level, it means you realize the 'Tattva' or the fundamental reality (Shiva) that underlies all forms. Once you recognize the 'gold' in one ring, you understand the nature of all gold jewelry.

Is this the same as Samyama in Raja Yoga?

It is similar but emphasizes the Shaiva view of 'Non-dualism' (Advaita). While Samyama focuses on mastery over the object, this dharana focuses on the 'oneness' (aikyam) of the practitioner and the object, leading to the dissolution of the ego into the universal essence.

Can I use a mental concept as the 'one thing'?

Yes, you can use a mantra, a feeling of love, or a single thought. However, using a physical object is often easier for beginners to prevent the mind from drifting into abstract chains of thought. The key is the 'one-pointedness' of the mind, regardless of the target.

What does 'dehabhṛt' imply in this verse?

Dehabhṛt means 'the wearer of the body' or the embodied soul. It acknowledges that even while we are in a physical body with limited senses, we have the capacity to transcend those limits and realize the universal truth through concentrated internal awareness.

How does 'unity with the Essence' feel?

It feels like a collapse of distance. You no longer feel like you are 'looking at' the world; rather, you feel that you 'are' the world. There is a profound sense of peace, as the friction of 'me versus that' disappears into a seamless experience of being.
