The Secret of Mantra — Shiva Sutra 2.3

This sutra deepens the teaching of the previous two by explaining what actually empowers a mantra. Kshemaraja interprets 'vidyāśarīra' as the collective body of letters and words (vidya) that constitute a mantra's outer form, and 'sattā' as the pure existence or being — ultimately Parasamvit, the Supreme I-consciousness — that underlies and animates that verbal form. The 'secret' (rahasya) of mantra, then, is not some esoteric technique of pronunciation or ritual procedure but the recognition that every mantra's living power derives entirely from the consciousness pulsating within it. Without this vimarsha, a mantra remains a lifeless string of phonemes; with it, even a single syllable becomes charged with the capacity to liberate. Kshemaraja links this directly to the doctrine of Matrika (letter-energies) developed later in the chapter: all sound, all language, arises from and points back to the same undivided I-consciousness. The secrecy here is less about concealment from outsiders than about a truth easily overlooked — practitioners fixate on the external mechanics of mantra (correct pronunciation, ritual timing, lineage transmission) while missing that its potency is nothing other than their own innermost Self shining through sound. This has significant practical implications: initiation (diksha) by a guru is valued not for conferring some external magical charge but for revealing this inner secret directly, so the disciple recognizes the mantra's deity as identical with their own witnessing consciousness, transforming recitation from ritual into direct realization.
