Overview

Chandra Bhedana is the cooling counterpart to Surya Bhedana, involving inhalation exclusively through the left nostril, which corresponds to Ida nadi, the lunar channel associated with calmness, coolness, and introspective mental states. By channeling breath consistently through the left side while exhaling through the right, this practice is believed to activate Ida nadi, pacifying excess heat in the body and quieting an overactive or agitated mind. Though less frequently mentioned in classical texts than Surya Bhedana, Chandra Bhedana has become an important part of contemporary pranayama instruction, particularly for individuals dealing with anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, or excess pitta manifesting as anger, inflammation, or acidity. The lunar quality of this breath is said to nourish the mind's receptive, intuitive faculties, making it a favored practice before meditation or in the evening hours when a transition toward rest and introspection is desired. Unlike Sitali or Sitkari, which cool through evaporative mechanisms at the mouth, Chandra Bhedana achieves its calming effect through the specific energetic pathway of the left nostril, working directly on the subtle nervous system rather than through physical evaporation. It is often taught as a complementary practice to Surya Bhedana, with practitioners alternating between the two depending on their seasonal needs or the specific imbalance they wish to address at a given time.

Technique

Sit comfortably with an erect spine. Using the right hand in Vishnu Mudra, close the right nostril with the thumb. Inhale slowly and deeply through the left nostril. Close both nostrils briefly and retain the breath comfortably if capable. Release the ring finger and exhale slowly through the left nostril, or, in some traditions, exhale through the right. Repeat for 8-10 rounds, consistently inhaling through the left nostril.

Benefits

Cools the body and mind, reduces anxiety, anger, and hypertension, promotes restful sleep, balances excess pitta, and nurtures the intuitive, receptive qualities of the mind associated with the lunar Ida channel.

Contraindications

Avoid in cases of excess kapha, chronic cold, low blood pressure, depression, or lethargy, as its cooling and calming effect may deepen these states. Not ideal for morning practice when energizing effects are desired instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should Chandra Bhedana be practiced instead of Surya Bhedana?

Chandra Bhedana is best practiced in the evening or whenever there is a need to cool an overheated body or calm an agitated mind, such as during periods of anger, anxiety, or insomnia. Surya Bhedana, by contrast, is suited for mornings and situations requiring increased energy and warmth.

Can Chandra Bhedana help with insomnia?

Yes, its calming influence on the nervous system through the lunar Ida channel makes Chandra Bhedana a valuable pre-sleep practice, helping to quiet racing thoughts and lower physiological arousal. Practicing a few rounds before bed can create the mental and physical conditions conducive to falling asleep more easily.

Is it safe to combine Chandra Bhedana with meditation?

Absolutely, Chandra Bhedana is often used specifically as a preparatory practice for meditation because its lunar, introspective quality naturally settles the mind and reduces mental chatter. A short session of this pranayama before sitting for meditation can significantly deepen the quality of stillness experienced.

Does this practice have any effect on emotional regulation?

Chandra Bhedana is traditionally associated with soothing excess heat-related emotions such as anger, irritability, and impatience, by activating the calming lunar energy channel. Regular practice can help cultivate greater emotional equilibrium, particularly for individuals prone to reactive or fiery emotional patterns.

Why is it considered less documented than Surya Bhedana in classical texts?

Classical Hatha texts placed greater emphasis on generating heat to awaken dormant Kundalini energy, so Surya Bhedana received more textual attention as a method for stimulating this process. Chandra Bhedana's cooling function was often assumed as complementary knowledge, only becoming more formally systematized in modern pranayama teaching.
