Surya — Navagraha

Surya, the Sun god, occupies the position of the king among the Navagrahas in Vedic astrology, representing the soul (atman), vitality, self-confidence, authority, and one's father in the natal chart. As the source of all life-sustaining energy on earth, Surya is worshipped as the visible form of the divine, the eye of the cosmic being, and the presiding deity over consciousness and willpower. He is depicted riding a magnificent chariot drawn by seven horses, representing the seven colors of light and the seven chakras of the subtle body, driven by the charioteer Aruna, the personification of dawn. Mythologically, Surya is the son of Sage Kashyapa and Aditi, and his consorts include Sanjna and Chhaya, with his children including Yama, Yamuna, Shani, and the Ashwini Kumaras. The Rig Veda contains numerous hymns dedicated to Surya, including the famous Gayatri Mantra, which invokes his illuminating power for awakening the intellect. In astrology, a well-placed Surya bestows leadership qualities, robust health, government favor, and a strong sense of individual identity, while an afflicted Surya can cause ego conflicts, health issues related to the heart and eyes, strained relationships with father figures or authority, and lack of self-confidence. Surya worship, particularly through the Aditya Hridayam and daily Surya Namaskar practices, is considered essential for maintaining vitality, mental clarity, and spiritual illumination, connecting the individual soul to the cosmic source of life and consciousness.

Offering water (Arghya) to the rising sun daily, reciting the Aditya Hridaya Stotra, donating wheat, jaggery, or copper items on Sundays, wearing ruby after astrological consultation, and practicing Surya Namaskar strengthen a weak Surya.
