Rahu — Navagraha

Rahu is one of the two shadow planets (chhaya graha) in the Navagraha system, representing the severed head of the Asura Svarbhanu, who disguised himself among the Devas to drink the divine nectar (Amrita) during the churning of the ocean. When Surya and Chandra recognized and exposed his deception, Vishnu, in his Mohini form, immediately severed Svarbhanu's head with the Sudarshana Chakra, but since the nectar had already passed his throat, the head became immortal, transforming into Rahu, while the body became Ketu, the two remaining eternally at odds with the Sun and Moon due to this act of exposure. Rahu represents desire, illusion, obsession, worldly ambition, foreign connections, unconventional paths, and sudden, unpredictable transformations in Vedic astrology, embodying the shadow aspects of consciousness that drive intense craving and the pursuit of material and sensory experiences beyond conventional limits. Unlike the seven classical planets, Rahu has no physical body, existing purely as a mathematical point representing the ascending lunar node, where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic, yet its psychological and karmic influence is considered profoundly significant in shaping an individual's deepest unconscious drives and unconventional life direction. In contemporary astrological practice, a well-placed Rahu can indicate extraordinary success in foreign lands, technology, politics, or unconventional fields, along with sharp intelligence and innovative thinking, while an afflicted Rahu often causes confusion, addiction, deception, sudden upheavals, and an insatiable, anxious craving for status or material gain that never brings lasting satisfaction. Worship of Rahu, particularly through Durga worship and specific remedial mantras, aims to channel its intense, transformative energy toward constructive ambition rather than destructive obsession or illusion.

Worshipping Goddess Durga, donating mustard oil, black sesame, or coconut on Saturdays, avoiding alcohol and intoxicants, feeding the underprivileged, and wearing hessonite after consultation help balance Rahu's intense energy.
