Chandra — Navagraha

Chandra, the Moon god, governs the mind (manas), emotions, intuition, and one's mother in Vedic astrology, representing the receptive, nurturing, and ever-changing aspect of consciousness in contrast to the fixed, radiant nature of Surya. Born from the eye of Sage Atri and his wife Anasuya, or according to other accounts churned from the ocean of milk during the Samudra Manthan, Chandra rides a chariot pulled by ten white horses, symbolizing the ten directions his cooling, illuminating rays pervade. He is famously married to the twenty-seven Nakshatra deities, daughters of Daksha Prajapati, though he showed excessive favoritism toward Rohini, provoking Daksha's curse that caused him to wane, which was later mitigated to create the waxing and waning lunar cycle we observe today. This mythological narrative explains the astronomical phenomenon of lunar phases while embedding profound psychological symbolism about attachment, favoritism, and the eventual restoration of balance through penance and divine grace. In astrological practice, Chandra's placement in the birth chart profoundly influences emotional temperament, mental stability, memory, and the relationship with one's mother, making it one of the most significant factors even beyond the ascendant in Vedic astrology, where the Moon sign (Rashi) is often used as the primary reference point for predictions. A strong Chandra bestows emotional resilience, popularity, and intuitive wisdom, while an afflicted Chandra can lead to anxiety, mood instability, and difficulties in nurturing relationships, making its worship essential for achieving mental peace and emotional equilibrium.

Wearing white clothes and donating rice, milk, or silver items on Mondays, offering raw milk to Shiva lingam, reciting Chandra mantras during the evening, and wearing a pearl after consultation help pacify an afflicted Chandra.
