Vasuki — Naga

Vasuki is among the most celebrated of all Nagas, renowned chiefly for his role as the churning rope during the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean by the Devas and Asuras. Wrapped around Mount Mandara, Vasuki endured being pulled back and forth by both celestial and demonic forces, ultimately enabling the emergence of Amrita, the nectar of immortality, along with numerous divine treasures. During this immense trial, Vasuki suffered greatly, and it was Shiva who compassionately intervened, taking Vasuki afterward as an ornament coiled around his neck—symbolizing the transformation of suffering endured in service of cosmic order into an emblem of grace. Vasuki is also honored as the king of serpents and is invoked in Naga Panchami worship across India. In Tantric cosmology he governs the throat center, representing the capacity to bear immense tension and pressure while still giving voice to truth. His narrative teaches the yogic lesson that austerity endured for the greater good, without bitterness, culminates in divine recognition and permanent proximity to the sacred. Vasuki thus embodies resilience, sacrifice, and the alchemical transmutation of hardship into ornament.

Vasuki is portrayed as a great serpent with a jeweled hood, often coiled three times around Shiva's neck, his body a deep blue-black hue reflecting cosmic depth. In depictions of the Samudra Manthan, he appears stretched taut between the Devas and Asuras, wound around Mount Mandara, his hoods flared in strain yet unbroken. He sometimes bears a small crown, denoting his royal status among serpent kings.

Vasuki governs the Vishuddha or throat chakra, the center of purification, communication, and the capacity to metabolize toxicity without being destroyed by it—just as Shiva later holds poison at his throat. Practitioners meditate on Vasuki to strengthen the throat center's ability to endure pressure while continuing to express truthful, purified speech and creative expression.
