Mahapadma — Naga

Mahapadma, whose name means 'the great lotus,' is counted among the foremost Naga kings and is traditionally regarded as an even more expansive and majestic counterpart to Padma, ruling over an immense serpent kingdom of legendary wealth. In cosmological numerology, 'Mahapadma' is also the name given to an incomprehensibly vast numerical unit, reflecting the association of this Naga with boundless, almost incalculable abundance and magnitude. He is frequently invoked alongside the other principal Nagas in the Ashta-Naga stotra, a hymn recited for protection from snakebite and for general prosperity, particularly during Naga Panchami observances. Mahapadma's symbolism extends beyond mere wealth; he represents the vastness of the subconscious mind itself, the great, largely unmapped reservoir of impressions, memories, and dormant potential that Tantric psychology associates with the serpent realms of Patala. To invoke Mahapadma is to acknowledge the immensity of what lies coiled beneath ordinary awareness and to seek its blessing rather than fear its depth. His mythology reinforces the Tantric principle that true abundance, whether material or spiritual, flows not from suppression of the unconscious but from honoring and rightly channeling its vast, hidden reserves through disciplined devotion and ritual reverence.

Mahapadma is portrayed as an immense serpent, larger and more resplendent than Padma, with multiple hoods adorned in gold and crimson jewels, symbolizing his vast wealth and dominion. He is often depicted surrounded by treasure vessels and lotus blooms in his subterranean palace, emphasizing themes of magnitude and abundance.

As a magnified reflection of Padma, Mahapadma also resonates with the heart chakra but on an expanded, cosmic scale, representing the vast reservoir of compassion and dormant potential within the unconscious. His energy teaches practitioners that the deeper the coiled reserves of the psyche, the greater the capacity for expansive love once that energy is consciously awakened and directed.
