Ananta (Shesha) — Naga

Ananta, also known as Shesha, is the king of all serpents and the primal being upon whom Lord Vishnu reclines amidst the cosmic ocean of milk. His name 'Ananta' means the infinite, signifying that which remains ('shesha') after the dissolution of the universe at the end of a cosmic cycle. With his thousand hoods, he forms a canopy over Vishnu, and upon these hoods, it is said, he perpetually sings the glories of the Supreme Lord, one hood dedicated to each name. In Shaiva-Tantric cosmology, Ananta is also understood as the very axis of manifestation, holding the earth steady upon his hood so that creation does not collapse into chaos. He represents the eternal substratum of time and space, the changeless witness beneath every cyclical unfolding of the cosmos. Ananta is also revered as an incarnation of divine humility and service, for despite his immense cosmic power he chooses the posture of a servant-seat, bearing the weight of Narayana himself. In yogic tradition, the sage Patanjali is considered an avatar of Shesha, gifting the world the Yoga Sutras. Meditating upon Ananta cultivates surrender, patience, and the recognition that beneath every transient form lies an infinite, indestructible ground of being that supports all existence without seeking recognition.

Ananta is depicted as a colossal white serpent with a thousand hoods, each crowned and bejeweled, coiled into a resting couch upon the cosmic ocean. Vishnu reclines upon his coils in yogic slumber (Yoga Nidra), with Lakshmi massaging his feet. Ananta's hoods fan out protectively above the divine couple like a living umbrella. His body is luminous white, symbolizing purity and infinite space, and his multiple mouths are shown perpetually chanting divine names in silent devotion.

Ananta represents the Sahasrara chakra itself—the thousand-petaled infinite consciousness at the crown where individual awareness dissolves into universal being. Just as Shesha supports Vishnu's cosmic repose, the awakened Sahasrara becomes the seat where the liberated Kundalini rests in eternal union with pure consciousness, symbolizing the final, boundless expansion of yogic realization.
