Intuitive Mind — Higher Mind

Higher Mind

Overview

The Intuitive Mind, known in Sanskrit as 'Pratibha' or 'Vijnana', represents the faculty of direct, non-conceptual knowing. Unlike the Social Mind which relies on language, or the Instinctive Mind which relies on biology, the Intuitive Mind draws its insights directly from the universal field of consciousness (Chiti). It is the 'Ajnachakra' in action—the third eye that sees beyond the duality of the physical senses. This mind operates through 'sphota', or sudden flashes of illumination, where the totality of a truth is understood instantaneously without the need for step-by-step logic. It is the bridge between the finite individual and the infinite Divine. The primary distortion of the Intuitive Mind is 'pseudo-intuition'—projections of personal desires, fears, or egoic fantasies masquerading as divine guidance. Without proper grounding and discernment (Viveka), one can fall into spiritual bypassing or delusion. To purify this layer, the practitioner engages in 'Dhyana' (meditation) and 'Svadhyaya' (study of sacred texts), which align the individual intellect with universal principles. The practice of 'Yoga-nidra' is also vital, as it allows the practitioner to access the subconscious and superconscious states where intuition flourishes. Transcendence of even this refined mind occurs in 'Samadhi', where the 'knower' and the 'known' become one. At this stage, intuition is no longer an occasional flash but a constant state of 'Prajna' (wisdom). The seeker becomes a 'Rishi' (seer), perceiving the underlying unity (Samata) of all existence and acting in perfect resonance with the cosmic rhythm (Rta), manifesting the will of Shiva through every thought and action.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell the difference between intuition and wishful thinking?

Intuition is usually quiet, neutral, and carries a sense of 'certitude' without emotional agitation. Wishful thinking is often loud, repetitive, and accompanied by a sense of excitement or anxiety. True 'Pratibha' arises in a state of inner silence, whereas egoic desires arise from a state of inner noise.

Does the Intuitive Mind bypass the need for logic?

It does not bypass logic but transcends it. Think of logic as walking and intuition as flying. You still need to know how to walk on the ground, but intuition allows you to see the whole landscape at once. A healthy mind uses intuition to find the truth and logic to implement it.

What role does the heart play in the Intuitive Mind?

In Shaivism, the 'Hridaya' (spiritual heart) is the seat of consciousness. While the third eye perceives, the heart feels the resonance of truth. True intuition is a 'heart-knowing' where the vibration of an idea matches the vibration of your innermost self, creating a sense of profound 'Spanda' or recognition.

Can I develop my intuition through specific exercises?

Yes, 'Trataka' (steady gazing) and focusing on the space between thoughts are excellent. Also, practicing 'Shunyta' (emptiness) meditations helps. By creating a 'void' in the discursive mind, you create the necessary space for the light of 'Pratibha' to descend and illuminate your consciousness with direct higher knowledge.

Is the Intuitive Mind the highest level of consciousness?

It is the highest 'functional' mind, but it is still a layer. Beyond it lies 'Parasamvit', or Supreme Consciousness, where even the process of 'knowing' dissolves into 'being'. The Intuitive Mind is the final gateway or 'the golden lid' that one must eventually pass through to achieve total non-dual liberation.
