Deep Sleep Mind — Causal Body Mind

Causal Body Mind

Overview

The Deep Sleep Mind, or Prajna, corresponds to the Sushupti state and the Anandamaya Kosha (the sheath of bliss). This is the level of the Causal Body (Karana Sharira), so named because it contains the seeds (Bijayas) of all future actions and incarnations. In deep sleep, the mind is folded back into a state of undifferentiated potentiality; there are no objects, no dreams, and no ego-identity. It is a state of profound peace and homogenization, yet it is characterized by a 'luminous ignorance' because the individual is generally unaware of the experience until they wake up and realize they 'slept well.' The operation of the Deep Sleep Mind is one of total rest and re-absorption into the causal matrix. Distortions at this level manifest as a 'tamasic' heaviness, where sleep does not result in refreshment but in a state of dullness and inertia. This occurs when the causal seeds are heavy with unresolved karma, preventing the soul from touching the true bliss of the Atman. To purify the Causal Body, one must engage in deep meditation (Dhyana) and the study of scripture (Svadhyaya) to burn the 'seeds' of karma through the fire of knowledge (Jnana-Agni). The practice of Turiya—the 'Fourth' state—involves bringing awareness into the gap between thoughts and the gap between waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. To transcend the Deep Sleep Mind is to enter the state of Samadhi, where the bliss of the causal body is experienced consciously rather than unconsciously. In this transcendence, the practitioner realizes that they are the eternal light that illuminates even the darkness of deep sleep, moving beyond the cycle of birth and death (Samsara) by exhausting the causal seeds that drive reincarnation.

Frequently Asked Questions

If there are no thoughts in deep sleep, how is it a 'mind'?

It is called the 'Causal Mind' because the potential for thought remains. Even though active thinking ceases, the latent impressions (Vasanas) exist in a seed form. It is the state of 'unmanifested thought,' similar to how a tree exists potentially within a seed before it sprouts.

How can I become conscious during deep sleep?

Practicing 'unbroken awareness' throughout the day and utilizing the 'Yoga of Light' techniques can help. By focusing on the heart center (Hridaya) during the onset of sleep, one can occasionally maintain a thin thread of witness-consciousness even as the physical and subtle minds shut down.

What is the difference between deep sleep and Samadhi?

Both states involve a withdrawal from the world and an experience of peace. However, deep sleep is wrapped in 'Avidya' (ignorance)—you don't know who you are. Samadhi is 'Vidya' (knowledge)—you are fully aware of your identity as pure consciousness while in a state of total absorption.

Why do I feel tired even after eight hours of deep sleep?

Physical duration does not guarantee causal rest. If your Causal Body is burdened by heavy karmic impressions or 'Tamas,' the quality of the sleep is degraded. Spiritual practices like evening meditation or chanting help clear the energetic field, ensuring that sleep becomes a true process of rejuvenation.

Can one resolve karma during the deep sleep state?

Generally, karma is resolved through conscious action or high-level meditation. However, if a practitioner has attained a degree of 'lucidity' in the causal state, they can begin to dissolve the 'Bija' or seeds of karma at their root, preventing them from manifesting in future waking lives.
