Sharabha — Deity

Sharabha is an extraordinary, multi-limbed zoomorphic manifestation of Shiva, described as a chimeric creature that is part-lion, part-bird, and part-god. This form was assumed specifically to neutralize the overwhelming fury of Narasimha, the lion-man avatar of Vishnu, after the latter had killed the demon Hiranyakashipu but remained consumed by a rage that threatened to incinerate the universe. In the higher theology of Shaivism, Sharabha represents the 'Ugra' (terrible) aspect of Shiva that intervenes when even other divine manifestations lose their equilibrium. He is the 'Shiva-Shakti' in a combined predatory form, emphasizing that Shiva is the ultimate source of power who can subdue any force, even those of the Preserver. The myth of Sharabha is central to the Sharabha Upanishad and various Puranas, where he is hailed as the supreme protector of the cosmos. Philosophically, Sharabha signifies the transcendence of all limitations; as an eight-legged beast capable of flying, he moves across all planes of existence to restore 'Dharma'. In the esoteric traditions of the South, particularly in Tamil Shaivism, Sharabha is revered as Sharabheshwara, the Lord who pacifies. He is the ultimate remedy for 'Ugra' energies, providing a meditative focus for those seeking to calm their own internal storms of anger and passion by surrendering to a power that is greater than any worldly or heavenly force.

Sharabha is depicted as a giant eight-legged creature, possessing the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. He has two massive wings, symbolizing Shiva and Shakti, and claws that are often shown clutching Narasimha. His head is that of a lion with tusks, and he frequently has several arms holding various Shiva-ayudhas (weapons). His complexion is usually gold or dark blue. In many depictions, he carries the goddess Pratyangira or Durga on his wings, representing his inherent power. He is shown with a long tail and a terrifying countenance, soaring in the sky while subduing the terrestrial lion-avatar beneath him.
