Dakshinamurthy — Deity

Dakshinamurthy is a unique aspect of Lord Shiva as the supreme primordial guru, the embodiment of all knowledge and the teacher of the Vedas, Tantras, and Shastras. The name 'Dakshinamurthy' means 'the one who faces south' (Dakshina), which symbolizes his power to face and overcome death, as the south is the direction of Yama. In the Shaiva tradition, he is the silent teacher who transmits the highest reality through 'Mauna Vyakhya'—silent discourse. This silence is not a lack of speech but a profound transmission of the state of Turiya (the fourth state of consciousness). He is usually depicted teaching the four elderly sages (Kumaras) who represent the seekers of truth who have exhausted all intellectual paths and seek direct realization. Dakshinamurthy represents the 'Jnana Shakti' (power of knowledge) of Shiva. He is the destroyer of the 'Apasmara' demon, which symbolizes ignorance and the forgetfulness of our divine nature. In the context of Advaita and Kashmir Shaivism, Dakshinamurthy is the personification of the inner Guru who resides in the cave of the heart, removing the veil of duality through the light of pure awareness. He is the patron of musicians, scholars, and yogis, providing the clarity needed to navigate the complexities of philosophical systems to reach the core essence of the Self.

Dakshinamurthy is depicted seated under a Banyan tree (Vata Vriksha), facing South. He is shown with four arms: one hand is in the Chin Mudra (symbolizing the union of the individual and universal consciousness), another holds a book of wisdom, the third holds a vina or a snake, and the fourth holds fire or a rosary. His right foot is planted firmly on the back of the dwarf-demon Apasmara, representing the suppression of ignorance. His left leg is crossed over his right knee. He is often surrounded by sages who sit at his feet. His expression is one of absolute tranquility and meditative absorption, with a third eye clearly visible on his forehead, signifying the perception of non-dual reality.
