Sthanu — 108 Names of Shiva

Sthanu refers to the fixed, immovable, and eternal nature of Shiva. The word literally means a stump, a pillar, or a stationary object. While other names describe Shiva's dance and movement, Sthanu describes his absolute stillness. He is the 'Axis Mundi', the central pillar around which the entire universe revolves. In many myths, when the gods and demons were confused by the appearance of a massive pillar of fire (the Jyotirlinga) that had no beginning or end, they were witnessing the Sthanu aspect of Shiva. This name represents the 'Kutastha'—the unchanging witness consciousness that remains constant while the mind, body, and world undergo incessant change. Contemplating Sthanu is a practice of finding the 'still point' within oneself. In the midst of life's chaos, there is a part of our being that never moves, never fluctuates, and never dies. By meditating on Sthanu, the seeker aligns with this eternal stability. It is the quality of extreme Tapas (austerity), where Shiva sits in Samadhi for aeons, unmoved by the seasons or the passing of cosmic ages. For the practitioner, Sthanu represents the goal of 'Sthira', the unshakable steadiness of body and mind necessary for the highest realization. It is the solid foundation upon which all of existence is built.
