Rudra — 108 Names of Shiva

Rudra is one of the oldest and most potent names of Shiva, rooted in the Rig Veda. Etymologically, it is often linked to the root 'rud' (to cry or howl) and 'dru' (to run). Rudra is the fierce aspect of the Divine who destroys sorrow by driving away the causes of suffering, often through seemingly harsh means. He is the lightning bolt that clears the air, the wild storm that uproots the dead trees of the forest. In the Shri Rudram of the Yajur Veda, he is praised as the lord of both the auspicious and the terrible. To contemplate Rudra is to acknowledge the necessity of destruction in the cycle of life. He is not 'evil' but is the 'Terrible' because the ego fears the dissolution of its attachments. Rudra's howl is the vibration of the Primal Sound (Shabda Brahman) that shatters the silence of the void to begin creation, and similarly shatters the delusions of the mind to reveal the truth. In the inner landscape, Rudra represents the transformative fire of Tapas. When we face intense trials or 'roaring' changes in life, we are encountering the Rudra energy. By surrendering to this name, we ask Rudra to be 'Shiva' (auspicious) to us—to let the storm of his grace wash away our impurities and leave behind the gold of pure spirit.
