Mrityunjaya is perhaps one of the most revered and potent names of Lord Shiva, celebrated in the famous Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. It denotes Shiva as the one who has completely triumphed over death and the fear of mortality. In the story of the young sage Markandeya, Shiva emerged from the Lingam to protect his devotee from Yama, the Lord of Death, demonstrating that his grace can overcome even the most inevitable of cosmic laws. Philosophically, Mrityunjaya does not just mean the avoidance of physical death, but the realization of the immortal nature of the self (Atman). To conquer death is to realize that the core of our being was never born and therefore can never die.
